Anyone removed roof mounted aircon and replaced with rooflight. Any idea of cost involved, or is it an easy DIY?

Should be an easy DIY job, can't be much different to changing a rooflight apart from removing the wiring. It will be a 240v supply so best to disconnect at the consumer unit then you can either remove the wiring or leave in place.

It's a very easy DIY job if you drive under a low bridge. You might not appreciate the slightly rough finish though:rofl:

Apart from the fact that the gas inside has to be recovered for it to be legal.Which , unless you are a fridge engineer with a recovery machine or have a mate who is one , means you'll be illegally venting !

surely the gas will be in a self contained unit so needn't be disturbed,
My thoughts too.(y) Exactly same as removing a fridge or freezer, only have to de-gas to legally dispose of unit I would have thought.

Should be a simple job as they normally fit straight into a 400x400 opening. 4 through bolts one in each corner.

However you will need help getting it down off the roof, depending on the model they can weigh from 30 to 45 kg

self contained unit so no need to de-gas , just replace with a rooflight easy enough job you will need access to the roof and some sharp blades and scrapers to cut through any mastic

I would levee the wiring as it could be used for roof mounted solder panels it would save on a cable run and additional holes being drilled in the roof if the isn't al ready
bill

As said, straightforward DIY job , cost will be the cost of roof light £50 - £269 http://www.olearymotorhomes.co.uk/rooflights--accessories-21-c.asp

dealer will charge probably 3 to 4 hours labour . @£50 per hour.. + materials say £200 labour + £ 75 materials.. so budget on £300

If the aircon is serviceable, sell it on ebay .. new ones are just shy of a grand.. so it may just cover the cost.

Please be aware that any venting of an f gas carries a 25 grand fine , so be carefull , and if its an old one with r22 gas in it you wil not be able to sell it , it will have to be disposed through a registered reclaim facility

Hi Folks,

Am revisiting this thread as just got back from getting a quote for removing aircon and replacing with roof light. The dealer was not really interested in doing the job and could not fit it in for at least two Months. Quote was (basic roof light) fitted £250. Fair I suppose, but am considering the DIY option. Have investigated the hole as a standard 400mm square. Turns out the aircon has an inverter concealed behind passenger seat.
Questions; Best sealant to use? Should I just leave the inverter in, can it be utilised?

Cheers,

Keith

yes you can leave the invetor in just disconnect the wires that feed the aircon and add a plug socket it may even have a plug socket on the invertor already
you obviusly need the right sized poof light to fit the appeture and some mastic sealing //bedding tape it is a simple enough job if your a competent diyer

This has been debated a couple of times.. Sikaflex or Mastic ..

I would use Carafax IDL 99 , a non-setting mastic that will flex and allow the roof and window to expand and contract without breaking the seal.. Or the same stuff on a mastic bedding strip that is easier and less messy to apply.. buy the correct width to suit the window seal ..

Clean the roof around the aperture with white spirit .. then apply mastic or sealing strip.. When you fix the window it should be pulled up just tight enough to compress the mastic, but not too much that it expels it all. Clean off any excess mastic with white spirit .

The inverter can be used as any other you would buy.. as said above..

Thanks for the input folks. Am now working on getting the thing off the roof - it weighs 42.5 Kgs. Think I am going to have to take it to work and use the fork lift for this.

Cheers

Tongue in cheek lateral thinking:- Attach Trailer to Motor-home, Find Bridge or overpass on quiet road and park underneath, Sling Block and tackle on said bridge , Hoist A/C Unit and tie off, drive forward until over trailer, Lower into trailer, Un-ship Tackle and go home Job Done!!!.:D:D:D:D

Pete.
