Renewing Motorhome Insurance??? (1 Viewer)

Hi Can anyone advise me on where to go for motorhome insurance, it must include European breakdown cover. At the moment we are with Saga, I just wondered if there was an alternative out there.

Last year I looked on the net and contacted about six and the difference was huge, I have changed company every year since I got the van, for cheaper or just to maintain the cost.

Every year, quotes have been different, so all I can recommend is shop around and compare, as what was good last year may not be now.

I too have changed companies every year because of their sneeky rotten practice of offering discounts to new customers and at the same time putting up the cost way above the inflation rate to the poor fool who stays with them from last year, EXCEPT....

I used Comfort insurance 2 years ago, now in my 3rd year with them and they only put the price up with inflation, which seems fair to me, I have never made a claim so I can't say how they are about that but the price is OK.

Insurance

We are with Saga at present but am considering a change. Last year whilst in Turkey our friends had an accident which resulted in the vehicle being a 'write off'. The problem was that we were in Asia and the Saga insurance (which our friends also had) only covered breakdown and recovery in 'Turkey in Europe' which is only a very small part of that country. They experienced serious problems in trying to get the vehicle to a garage and then to the border crossing; you have to leave Turkey with the vehicle, driveable or otherwise, since it is part of the owners passport whilst in that country. They did finally manage it but only after hours on the phone complaining about the lack of action or information.
The other problem to look for in the policy is the length of time permitted away from home - some are restricted to 30 or 40 days. (This also applies to household insurance in which Saga appears better than most with 90 days away from home.)

Hi,

Safeguard for us also as it includes unlimited European use together with unlimited European breakdown cover plus unlimited mileage for a very competitive price.

I did read that someone who was with Saga, rather than renew via the renewal notice used to go online and open a new insurance, I don't know if this is possible, or legal, or whether it would get you a lower price. But it may be worth exploring at the least if you do find a lower price by going online then you could ask them why they can't match it, if you do try let us know how you get on as it could help others

Following advise and trends on here I have gone with Nfu this year, I have received one of the most competitive quotes, combined with a workable policy covering every aspect of what I need a policy to do,they even took on board our new to be toad (Mini Cooper) and have both the Motor Home and Mini fully comp, connected or not via an A frame what more can you ask
I imagine they would be extremely competitive with Europeans, they also cover 5ers too:thumb:
As said on here before you have to contact Sarah Toplis at the Louth branch, you wont find a better clued up lady for Motorhomers needs and cover available, 10/10

Hi yes there is, try RH Specialist Division I have been with them coming up 3 years they are excellent,free breakdown cover UK, and free European Breakdown cover fully comp. no mileage restrictions, phone number is 01277 206912 the address is Library House,New Road, Brentwood, CM14 4GD

I use lifesure (known as Motor caravan insurance agency) and have done for the past 20 yrs.
They also do travel ins and euro breakdown insurance.
They are specialists in MHs and so they will know what you are on about if you talk to them.

Check 2 things

If you have an 'A' class - check 2 things;

1st. find out how much a replacement windscreen is for your van

2nd ask your insurance company what their allowance for screen replacement is...

You may have a shock!

Had two years with Safeguard and have just switched to Comfort as it was over £80 cheaper. Both included Euro recovery and seem to offer similar levels of cover. I have set my annual mileage limit at 8,000 and that is more than we have averaged to date. Obviously it costs more for a higher allowance. My current windscreen max is £2,000 which I think is sufficient (subject to £75 excess).
Both companies very pleasant to deal with and specialise in motorhomes. Safeguard is a division of Swinton Insurance and Comfort is a family business underwritten by NU / Aviva.

I would agree with you .RH very competitive on our Motorhome also insure my Triumph Stag with them been with them for several years now .Definately worth a try.:thumb:

Try Safeguard they include AA Breakdown in their policy. I`ve just ditched SAGA as they quoted £477 to renew a Telephone Policy and on line £324. Appreciate the on line includes discounts but the price difference smacks of `rip-off` for the unsuspecting and now any hint of that and I just walk. Safeguard quoted £323 incl. breakdown SAGA wanted £96 on top of the £477.

I agree with you totally about Saga! We paid £401 last year for Comprehensive and European breakdown, when I went on their site yesterday the cost for the same cover was £265! I rang and asked why there was such a wide difference in price - "can't really say, online has a discount!"

The problem we have is that we are going away to Spain soon and the insurance runs out 2 days before we are due to return to UK in June. Obviously it would be difficult to have them send a new insurance policy to wherever we might be, and we certainly could not travel back home without a valid insurance, so what I wanted to do was extend for a couple of days - "can't do that."

They suggested that I cancel the current insurance - although they could not tell me how much it would cost to reinsure, or tell me if I would lose the cost of the remainder of the policy. I said OK cancel and I would renew on line - can't do that, if I just cancel there is a £35 charge and no guarantee that I will get a refund of the already paid policy!

We have decided "can't do that" sod them, we are going to come home early, cancel their bl**** policy and insure with somebody else when we get home!

Another advantage of this course of action is that we can call in at Stratford show on our way home! an ideal time to catch up with funsters again.

Sometimes works the other way.

When i had a car i always got various online quotes and only once ever managed to beat my current insurer. When i phoned and told them they asked me who it was, how much they quoted, then offered me a better price on the phone. So insuring online isn't always cheaper!

Be aware of general vehicle insurance. My son-in-law insured with a well known company as a Motor Home. However when he required a repair, despite saying It is a Motor Home, Five different garages turned up to take vehicle in for repair, and refused as could not cope with a vehicle so large. Eventually when S-I-L suggested the dealer that they bought the van from, they were told " not on our list of repairers". Obviously only set up for cars, but happy to take your money.

Well, we are not too bothered about that, we will have been away for nearly 3 and a half months, and we have decided we would like to call at Stratford Motorhome show on the way back as we had such a great time with Motorhomefun last year! winners all round really!

Well after a long running email saga (sorry for the pun)!!! Saga have finally sent me this email today:

"Thank you for your recent communication regarding your Saga Motorhome Insurance
policy.

There is nothing to stop you cancelling this policy on renewal and accepting
one on on-line.

I do understand your feelings and apologise that this is the way around it."

So that is a result and is exactly what we will do!!

Hi, I find Caravan Guard insurance very good on price inclusive of breakdown cover, but you do have to have a tracker, well worth pricing it up. johnnyK
