Getting a mechanical service for an old motorhome? (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I'm probably posting this in the wrong place - apologies if so.

I recently bought a 1988 Hymer b544 on a Fiat Ducato chassis, and am intending to take it into Europe for 3 weeks in the summer. Only problem is that all of the MH specialist garages refuse to deal with the mechanical side of a vehicle this age (although they're happy to look at the habitation).

Can anyone offer any advice?

Any help would really be appreciated.

Cheers!:thumb:

Hi give Dave Newell a call his number is on the top of the page. I take mine too Midland Intnational in Coventry but he specializes in arv's so for that reason and that reason alone he may not do it. Give him a Call, ask for Tony.

Trouble is nowadays mechanics are dinosaurs and sadly new so called mechanics are just fitters.

Geo, Dave Newell & co are real old school mechanics.

Thanks everyone

Cheers guys!

All very helpful.

Peter - think you might be the ones to speak to... think our awning need repair as well.

Tend to head down to Brighton quite regularly (the missus lives there).

Should I mention your name when I call?

started when I was 11 with my parents-forgot to stop!been real one since 1980!
Motor mechanics are a dying breed. Nowadays they are fitters or computer operators.
A good mechanic is hard to find, but when you do hang on to him. I know of 2 up here one is a VW specialist and brilliant the other is a general mechanic who has the long forgotten analytical skills who repairs rather than replaces things.

Only trouble with Dave and Geo is that they live nowhere near Tees-Side

Could be worth following Terry's advice. Our van and car are looked after by a mobile mechanic who we have known for over 20 years. He does a great job, charges reasonable rates and has always been reliable.

As it happens we just booked the car in for MoT & service next Thursday and the van for its MoT the following Monday (van service not due until May/June).

I could take the vehicles down to the MoT station myself but Paul only charges a few quid for arranging and look after everything - and I have the peace of mind of knowing that should anything need doing he will be geared up to sort it out.
