A good choice Sir.

We used Lucerne as a stopover on the way to Italy last year. Dead Easy, only one stop needed. This is around Rheims but the aires were not that convenient so we ended up at a municipal site in Saint Avoid then next stop a campsite next to the Lido on the shore of Lake Lucerne. A really nice place, we could have done with a couple more days. Trummelbach Falls are a never to be forgotten site.

In my humble opinion it would be worth going the extra mile and visit Lake Maggiore.

Only problem with Switzerland is buying a motorway pass if you want to use the motorways.

How so???, I am ignorant of the pass system in Switzerland but it is on our list of places to go and explore in 2009 and 2010.

Thanks

Anywhere in Switzerland is nice and you will find the Swiss people very welcoming with many of all ages anxious to try out their english with you! Many Swiss are multi-lingual, (four or five languages is common) particularly those in the German speaking area of Switzerland who make up approx 70% of the country.

Don't miss out the Bernese Oberland region....this is a real must see! The scenery is absolutely amazing and i'd highly recommend you take a trip on the Jungfraujoch mountain railway from Lauterbrunnen. This climbs slowly up to Kleine Scheidegg giving absolutely incredible views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountains. You need to pick the right day with good clear weather. Not cheap but well worth the expense and a trip with lasting memories!

Avoid Zurich and Interlaken.

Zurich is the industrial heart of Switzerland and the city itself isn't particularly anything special either, but it's no more than you'd expect when surrounded by industry.

Interlaken is nice.......but packed full of 'brits' with gi-normous m/h's and caravans who park up on sites by Lake Brienz or Thun, sit there for a fortnight or so, then head back to blighty to tell all their friends they've 'seen' Switzerland. They've seen nothing!!!

Its interesting also to note the style of houses which vary between each region (known as cantons). But all have one thing in common.......build quality which is absolutely first class.

Swiss have a reputation for 'getting it right' every time and if it's your first time in Switzerland, be prepared for a culture shock.......because everything works right and works on time! They simply don't accept 'second best' or have a 'make do' attitude like 'brits'. One of the best ways to experience this is to leave your mh and take a trip using only bus and train. Not only are they absolutely immaculate inside an out, both buses and trains run on time to the second. Their Public Transport system is an example to the world of exactly how it should be done.

Bern is the capital city but a very beautiful city to walk around with plenty of restaurants and coffee bars where 'al fresco' is the norm.

People often think Switzerland is prohibitively expensive.....it's not. Yes their average income levels are far higher than that in the UK as is their standard of living, but costs are not that much different compared to here. Look in the shops at items you can compare with here in the UK and you will see what i mean.

Finally, i would advise buying a motorway vignette and at sFr40 (£24) for a full 12 months, it's dirt cheap and will give you access to all motorways within Switzerland. See how far you can get for £24 on the autoroutes in France! You could easily spend that in less than a day!!

Maybe "problem" is overstating it.

Just something else to do, though if you don't, you pay the price if you drift onto a motorway !

I bought one by email from the UK for under £20. But £20 is £20 and they don't do it booking + 1 year, oh no, it's Jan to Jan so you'd pay a whole year to use it a week in the summer and could not use it next spring.

There is a good case to stay off the motorways, see the real Switzerland, which is spectacular. They know how to do a hill in Switzerland.

I stick by saying that Switzerland is put there so that we can get to Italy by a nice route.

You can buy your pass at the border and you can get it on internet from here. One thing worth remembering that the basic yearly pass is valid for vehicles up to 3.5t over that you need a different one. These cost a lot more but there are at least two types, one which covers you for the year and one that allows you so many days ( think 7 days ), these do not have to be consecutive you basically write on the form the days you are in Switzerland. The second one is the one I had last year on route to Italy and back.

Enjoy your trip it is lovely over there.

You are right about it being quite easy to suddenly find yourself 'drifting on to a motorway' in Switzerland but it should also be pointed out that whilst the Police are extremely efficient, they are also very forgiving, helpful and understanding. If caught by the Swiss Police on a motorway without a vignette, you would more likely find yourself being informed where to buy one from than subjected to an 'on the spot' fine, unless you have driven in Switzerland before and are being blatantly deceitful (they will know!).

Just like here, the motorways are only best used as a means of getting from A to B a bit quicker though some do pass through very scenic parts with wildlife (buzzards are common) in abundance.

The country roads certainly do let you see the real Switzerland at a leisurely pace and a drive up and down a few mountain roads are another experience not to be missed.
