normally stay at bergues after channel tunnel evening crossing but need to get a bit further in February for the schlepp down to Austria ski slopes the next day. Looking at tournai in Belgium as a possibility for quick overnight stay - any experience or other suggestions. Tunnel gets in at 10.30 pm so willbe arriving late and dark and leaving aire by 8 am next morning

Stayed at Tournai about 5 years ago. It was raining as we went to bed and then turned COLD. In the morning, I had to walk very gingerly across to the borne in order to empty the cassette (easier to write that the French way - K7 )

The aire is/was fine for the overnight stop with shops no more than 150 m away.

We stopped at Gravelines Aire in November last year. About 30 minutes from Calais.
Basic (just a car park), but perfect for an overnight stop over

Tournai is a large, well-equipped aire but can be rather noisy as there is a main dual carriageway running past - even though it is about 100 metres from the parking position.
If you are prepared to go further, there is one at Arlon just before the Luxembourg border. It is at the Fire Station - here is the entry from CC-infos.

Hi - Jean Lucs suggestion is worth thinking about - we had similar times to you on the way out to the Alps- stayed in Calais no problems and away very early in the morning - the fire station is a good stop - quiet - no water avaialable at the moment as turned off - 4 electric hook ups -
Enjoy Austria - they seem to have reasonable snow conditions at the moment

Thank you for replies. I think it may well depend on the weather I as we wish to go overnight. Tournai looks enormous and should get a space But noisy. Arlon would get us much further, but concerned driving time - Google maps says about 4 hours and that the aire is small so may be full when we arrive about 2 am (if Google is right), although very tempted as gets us closer to those beckoning slopes - yes snow looking great, have just changed from original France destination to Austria as a result

Arlon aire is in the Fire and Ambulance station yard!
There is a lot of overflow space if you arrive late and there are no official spaces left. It is very quiet so long as nobodies house catches fire somewhere!
It is about 4hrs from Calais though.
We stayed there on Christmas Eve eve!

When we went via Luxembourg we stop at Han-sur-Lesse 50.127599, 5.187928 at the edge of the village over looking a pony paddock, but only a couple of hundred yards from the village centre. As for noise it was next the coach park and this was where the kids waited for the school bus in the mornings, but you park at the other end of the aire. Seven euros fifty including electricity.
At the centre of the village there was a little tourist train to the caves.

Thank you - we hacked it down from calais and stayed here on the way down. A great aire for putting your head down and moving on the next morning. We arrived about 10pm and in the overflow - but not the last to arrive at all

Thank you here too as stayed on the way back. Very very clean, tidy and electric hook up. It was about 70 % full so I imagine you would have to get there early in the summer to get a space. In the summer there Is water and the public toilet open, but again for a quick overnight stay, it suited our needs perfectly. The tourist office was closed, and we were confused how to pay, but a very nice woman came around at 9 am to relieve us of our euros. At €7.50 it was very reasonable.
