ferry/tunnel prices (1 Viewer)

Has anyone noticed the the increased cost of travel between dover/calais this year ?I traveled dover dunkirk last year for about £60 return this year around £100 more.

You got away light ! Managed to get a one way out there cheap enough ( wellll,,,, £60 ) but the return is gonna be at least £100

When I booked the tunnel for Feb half term I got the price for a Dover-Calais ferry just as a comparison. For us (7.4m MH, 2 adults, 2 dogs) there was only about £30 over the return trip in it and for me the convenience and speed of the tunnel is worth that every time. When I've checked in the past several times the tunnel has been slightly cheaper than the ferry.

If I remember an article I read a couple of months back, our friends in the EU have stipulated that all EU registered ships operating in/from European ports have to use a special fuel, I think it became law on 1st Jan ( rest of the world have till 2020 to comply) this fuel is not compatible with present engines so very expensive modifications have to be done to engines to comply.
Someone correct me if I have got it wrong

Good price wont get that on tunnel unless you travel at stupid o clock then still wont match it.

Oh believe me, I have REALLY tried..
Every day of the week and just about any old hour from the middle of the night to the middle of the day..
Just too expensive

Why not use ET Frequent Travellers deal. Works out at £108 return ANYTIME of year, but off peak. (oo.00 till about 10.00 Folkestone Calais Calais Folkstone 16.00 till about 23.00) Buy 10 crossing (five returns) You can share 10 crossing with one other named person.

There have been restrictions in EU waters on the amount of sulphur allowed in fuel used by ships for several years, but the amount allowed has been coming down. As of 1 Jan this year it came down from 1% to 0.1%. These limits are for the Baltic, North Sea and English Channel. Global shipping is still chugging around with in some case fuels with over 4%.

If you have looked at what comes out of a ship's funnel and seen a yellow cloud stretching back into the distance you will realise sulphur in the air is not a good thing. Apart from any human impact from breathing it in, especially when the ships are near land, the acidification of the oceans is a major cause for concern. Ticket prices will increase, but I am happy to live with that for cleaner air.

So have I & have never managed to get anything less than double the ferry price. & my MH is shorter than my car.

The tunnel often still works out cheaper for us here in Dorset. The ferry from Poole works out at about £500 return and it is in dry dock over Easter this year!!!!!! The tunnel is just so easy and convenient to use. The only downside is the 3 hour journey to get there. We have looked at other ferries but they are either already booked or too expensive. We arrive as late as possible, stop the other side and then drive on early next morning. The fares are slightly cheaper late night.

Glad Im not the only one who thinks the tunnel has got stupidly expensive. No matter what times I put in I cant justify the extra cost. Checked 2 days ago for skiing in February tunnel worked out £120 more expensive for same date and time as ferry.

My lady has just discovered that Eurotunnel OWNS Myferry.. And it has now got to sell it off due to a court ruling.. Hence the demise of Myferry..

Also depends if you have a trailer ( which we do )
Without the trailer the ferry costs us £62 even at peak
And I have just checked again JUST in case I made a foofoo
This time the results were even sillier !!!

Also double checked in case the fares were loaded because of it being a one way trip.. But absolutely identical
But take the trailer away..

Just absolutely NO WAY I can justify all that extra dosh for the sake of one extra hour in total travel time

I'm with John (Jaws) and Rory (Forestboy) having searched the Euro Tunnel dates and times extensively, and unless travelling at stupid times of the day, the cheapest fares are £75 out, and £84 back, totalling £159.

Our last Dover/Dunkerque return crossing in September 2012, cost us £48. The same return crossing booked for this September is £88. Although close to double the previous price, it is only £8.50, over half the Euro Tunnel price. That' a difference of £71, and at today's diesel prices in France, that is almost a full tank of fuel, ie, 400 miles travelling.
For me, it's a no brainer.

Wow the trailer makes a huge difference For us (no trailer, no bike rack, no roof boxes) the difference between tunnel and ferry isn't anything like as much, occasionally the tunnel has even come up slightly cheaper but even when it isn't when travelling with the dogs I would rather pay slightly more than have to leave the dogs on their own in the vehicle for a crossing.

Just one more reason I put my foot down over another dog. Woman really wants another ( to be fair we are both very much doggy people ) but since we got the van ( shortly after our last one passed away from old age ) I do not want the hassle

I'm with John (Jaws) on this one. Would prefer the Tunnel but because we pull a trailer the fares are just silly.
