I'm a newbie November 2014
We are currently planning our first 2 week holiday in our MH.
Being very new just wondered how you go about planning it.
Do you book ahead and how many nights do you choose if you are looking at touring? How many miles would you think of travelling in one day?

We are looking at starting at Elan Oaks in Elan Valley mid Wales in June as it looks like a great site and working our way back to Plymouth .

Any good sites on the way back with good walks, pubs and shops nearby as don't always want to move the van?

Really looking forward to it.

Thanks
Steve & Tracey

No one answered after all this time.. :(

I will try...First question (Do we book ahead) Depends, if in the UK and out of term time very rarely, abroad sometimes..

How many night`s..... depends if you have some form of transport, if not then out in the sticks a max of a couple of days... with transport and if there is a lot to see 3 or 4 days..

How many miles.... difficult to call.... might be some thing and some where interesting within 20 - 30 miles... but long haul we average 150 - 200 miles a day.. more on the continent..

When we lived in Brixham and travelling North we used to aim to get away by about 9 9-30am and book in at Briarsfield camping for the first night.arriving approx 3pm ... then you are not far from Midlands/Wales etc..

The main thing is you are on holiday so don`t rush, cos if you do you will miss so much..

Happy Travel`s... (y)

Just picked this one up
Last year we toured round England for 2 weeks and coming from North of Scotland 1st day was about 550 miles leaving at 6am
Cheddar gorge we had booked 5 days but far too long so left after 3 ( no refund)
Didn't book ahead after that but decided where to go then made a few calls to check possibilities
We were traveling about 3- 4 hours between sites and thought all we are doing is driving so 2nd week we sometimes left a site at 11 and was on next site at 12 and much more relaxing and just concentrating on a smaller area of the country
Usually try to find sites within walking or cycling distance of town or village to save moving MH

The Pembrokeshire Coast is well worth a look. Numerous sites around St Davids, and a couple of sites at Newgale. Coastal bus services are good so you can catch the bus then walk the coast path back to your MH.

My suggestion, and it might seem a little unadventurous, would be to join the Caravan Club and plot your route there and back using their sites. Many of them are a bit in the sticks but you should be able to find ones which suit you.

I wouldn't book but some sites can be busy at weekends, especially if the weather is good. Give each site you are heading for a call if you want peace of mind, you might find a remote site is suddenly full with a rally. You can also book many CC sites on line.

Spend a weekend on your drive (if you have one).
Then all the things you haven't loaded are just a few feet away.
You will also find out if you really know how all the things work.

Enjoy your time away

We just pack and go.

We haven't done a tour longer than a week yet though.

Good luck and enjoy!

Pretty much as the above posts say. It's pretty much down to what you want to do at the time. We have been long haul trips where we drive for as long as we can the evening we finish work. We also have been trips where we pick a couple of overnight stops on the way and only drive for an hour or two each day. Usually if we are heading for a specific area we will stay within that area and just do short trips between sites and site seeing. We sometimes stay a couple of nights on a site or head for another one depending if we have planned a route. One thing I would say though is unless it's a peak period no need to book more than a day in advance. We have never turned up to a site and been turned away ( we have turned around and left because it didn't look great ). We have also planned rough routes only to completely change them due to a change in the weather, finding out an event we would like to attend is on and other reasons. If the sites you like are in towns or cities these tend to be more popular and fill up so call ahead if not booked. We used to plan down to the last detail when we had caravans but now we always have it at the back of our minds that if all else fails we can find a quiet spot to park up for the night.

we tend to do 3 week long trips and often cover 2000-2500 miles in that time. we zigzag back and forth across the country so as not to miss the good bits in the middle. WE don't use sites but if we did would not book and stick to CL's Why not take in a rally or two, the Ilfracombe rally in in August and a great way to meet a lot of funsters, put faces to names and share a wee drink or two.

Living the dream.
Heck, this took some time to be answered, apologies.

It's been said above but I'll throw my two penneth in. You and you alone can decide what and how you want to do it. Do you want to go somewhere and stop there or do you want to tour?
First one is easy, find somewhere and book it. Second one is easy too if you don't mind where you stop. We were away for a week in Dec. and we were heading for my brothers in Torquay and that's all we knew. Because it was my brother we didn't need to book, just turn up but the other nights were different.
We set off from notloB and headed down the A49 ' cos we don't do motorways unless we can help it. The 1st night we fired up the hotspot Mrs Badknees phone and went on pubstops, rang a place up in Hereford to ask if we could stay, no problem. The water tank was full, the grey and black empty, the batteries charged up so we were fine.
Next day we decided about lunchtime to head for Bath, so knowing we would never be able to park up we looked on here for recommendations and found a campsite right next to the park and ride so we stayed there the night and visited Bath by bus.
The next two days we used pubstops till we got to Torquay and the same coming home.
Some peeps on here can wild camp for days on end because of the batteries they have and solar panels but we like to travel most days to different places, sometimes we only travel for an hour or so, sometimes longer.
The beauty of owning a MoHo is you can go wherever you want, planned or unplanned it's up to you.(y)

That was a "goes on a bit post" by the ever helpful Badknee

Steve & Tracey

When we started out we joined CC, of course and set off. First time we needed a CC site, FULL and so it went on.

So at busy times, if you want a specific site it does pay to book in advance.

But the bottom line is, you are in a home with food, you aren't going to die so go for it.
