Any one got a bit of heat sink for a TO-3 can ? (1 Viewer)

I know there are several folk out there who like me play with 3 legged fuses and stuff, so wonder if anyone has a smallish bit of heat sink suitable to mount a TO-3 type transistor on ? ( It is actually a 3055 for a 5amp psu I am rebuilding.. only used it a few days drawing 2A and it went pop.
Opened it up and all it had as an output was a TIP41 mounted straight to a PCB !! )
Reworked it with a TIP41A as a control tranny a fold back voltage detector in the form of a 741 op amp and using a 3055 as an output device..
I found all the odds and sods in various tins but sadly, during one of womans mass clear outs many years ago, ALL my heat sink material seems to have been put somewhere safe ( like in the bin I think )

Any one help at all ??

Will look in my workshop tomorrow, certain there's a few small heatsinks in the drawer. may just have a TO3 type with fins. if there is, you're welcome to it

Its a dead give away.. No self respecting op would buy NEW heat sink.. Nor even 2nd hand one for more than about 3 quidlets

Come next year ( now I seem to have sunk right back in to electronics ) I shall be trolling through the radio rallies to restock on all manner of odds and sods but for the moment.....

Magic stuff.. stuff that is filled up with smoke and does all sorts of wonderful things.. I tell you, Hogwarts has nothing on the average wee workshop used by those in to the dark arts of electronicals

This is absolutely true.. All electrical items are filled with smoke when made.. By mixing different types of smoke in the components you can get the thing you are building to do all sorts of things..

Think this is bull ?
When something inside a device breaks open and lets the smoke out, said item will stop working yes ?
Sat there watching telly, you hear a small 'pop!' and a wee puff of smoke comes out.. telly dies a death.. See.. its all true !

Correct the current ones are quite poor.

Just been down to the workshop and found this sitting on a shelf !

Soon hack a lump of that off and job done ! ( Left over from a 100 Amp PSU I built for the club many years ago )
Absolutely NO idea what the transistors are which is a shame as they are gonna end up in the bin

One of my saws was installed in the Thermalloy factory somewhere towards Bristol, I helped myself to a serious set of "samples" out of their scrap bin from an inch across to a foot across. The noise when those huge fins were sawn was like a 747 taking off. Ah those were the days, making sure a whole batch was cut to +/- 0.25mm.

Do not be a defeatist with the transistors make something even if its only smoke. I think I took that photo of tonka at Scarborough rally we used to share a stand at radio shows happy days. I was on 40m yesterday listened on 7.160 WAB net did not hear your callsighn. _._ G4TJB

Just bought two more 'books' as it happens..
Had to as all my old awards and areas are no longer counted, so got to start all over..
been on the net a few times but still bloody busy doing other stuff at the moment.. just popping in and out and being a bit of a pain in the bum to the net controller !!
I expect as things slowly wind down in other parts of my life I will find more time to get on the WAB net..

Sooo.. the oddball trany's are NPN, in a TO-3 can, in banks of 5 ... so must be able to handle a bit of oomph.. Chucked in the NPN draw 'just in case ' !

Except a modern MOSFET the size of a small finger nail is a better switch. The times they are a changing.

Well they can certainly handle more thermal shock and react faster too of course.. MosFet depletion layers are an order of magnitude better that the old school stuff.. But given the physical size of the old T3's and what I am likely to use them for, I aint too fussed

I remember when Gasfets first arrived big time .. The noise figures were little short of amazing ( built a VHF mast head preamp using them for the contest group ) but nowadays, again, things have moved on at a wondrous pace and I look back and think how the hell did the early ones ever work !!

Ah, memories! All a bit new fangled for me. We used to build oscilloscopes out of old valve tellies in the physics lad on otherwise boring wet Saturday afternoons. Transistors were still fairly new & I'm not sure the venerable lab technician was convinced they'd catch on! I can't remember if A level physics covered transistors or if I had to wait 'till college to learn about them.

As far as I was concerned, transistors were a means of listening to I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again under the pillow in the the dorm.

I enjoyed dabling in electronics as a teenager. I haven't really had time since. I do still have the soldering iron that I got as a Christmas present around that time & it still gets used a couple of times a year. It would be nice to get back into it once I retire, along with the music, the travelling, computers, a bit of programming .... ah - what was I saying about time?

The heat sinks that I've got were used for converting 24v down to 12v for CB radio's and the like. I've various sizes in the garage up here in NE Lancs. The largest is out of a Merc tractor unit, about 10" in length x 5" in width. Your just a little bit to far away down in Nooorfolk.

Caller, I was raised on thermionic devices.. And have built a fair few bits and bobs using 'ugly construction' and it was only a couple of years ago I finally dumped all boxes of spare telly valves.. Had at least one of everything from the entire thorn series from the 700 chassis through to the 2000X ones ( Worked for DER for a couple of years and ended up specialising in the Thorn / Ferguson range )

Don't they reckon that BBC Long Wave will have to shut down when the last of their transmitter valves goes pop? Nobody is making them any more & I'm not sure any one even knows how to. Not exactly your common or garden telly valve, mind you. I saw a picture of one once - stands about 3ft high if I remember rightly.

The husband of our keyboard player builds & restores ancient valve amps as a hobby. Mostly stuff from the 40s & 50s from what I saw on their kitchen table last time I was there. Also doubles up as central heating, I think.

Back in the early 80's I delivered a klystron to Marconi in Chelmsford.
I just collected a box that was about 4ft long by 2ft by 2ft
When I delivered it I asked what it was.. It was the output valve they had been testing on a UHF transmitter according to the guy I spoke to !

The valves I binned were just common as muck things, like EF80 IF amps, PCL various, PL's ( some PL500 and PL36 LOP devices )

Ahhh ..happy days. Unfortunately electronics seems to be more about software nowadays. What would take a board full of 74 series TTL can be done with one or two chips now. Where's the fun in debugging that.

my Dad was in to electronic thingys, when he passed i had to clear his shed and found boxes of old valves, put them on ebay and a guy in Hong Kong bought the lot for over a grand

but threw loads of resistors in binwith other stuff

there is some stuff left if one of you wants it, dont ask what as I dont know but will post up when back from Portugal in new year, so no rush,
