Mozzies in Germany (1 Viewer)

We have just received a guide to sites in Germany and Merilyn immediately said that they were no good for her because most of them are by water and she is a magnet for mozzies and anything else insectwise that bites. So is she right to be concerned?

I am bumping this because I'm sure from your posts that there are many fans of Germany on here and it is a serious concern for her. Are mozzies as a big a problem as they are in Scotland?

Never been a problem to us. We love camping by lakes and the rivers. Rhein, Mossel, Neckar.

The only nasty was cycling round the lake in Fussen, just one patch it was like riding through a sandstorm. But the camp, half a mile away was fine and no bites anyway.

Great country, just do it.

We traveled through Germany this summer and we didn't find Mozzies a problem - have been bitten more often in UK than we did in Germany

I am a magnet for mozzies and had no trouble when we went. Lot of the sites we stayed on were by water. Do it. We loved it .

If you see one or two be careful, as they are frequently used as pathfinders and the main force of Bomber Command may not be far behind.

I have never had a problem and usually stay near the main rivers. I have done trips in May, June & September.

sorry to say if she is a magnet will be problems all over. We went sept last year and l was eaten alive to late l was told about Atun apparently excellent. We are going to SA shortly and l am stocking up on mozzie killer anti itch and repellant.
Having said that it will probably depend ontime of year as to problem Lake Constance was the worst place for them but the were near and far from obvious water...if it has a scoop of water a mossie will breed so go take precautions and enjoy we love Germany will go back

There are no mozzies in Scotland !! but Midgies are a different kettle of bugs, it is a bugger if you stop at some places when thousands of the little bugger decide to visit for a feast !!

stopped on a site in Germany on route to Denmark a couple years ago, and got bitten by something that has still left a little sore on my hand that keeps flaring up.. hand puffed up quite badly at time and had to get some tablets and cream from a chemist in Denmark.. took about a wk to settle. so yes it can be a problem but suppose it could happen anywhere

Thanks for everyone's replies. We love Scotland but have to be very careful where and when we go. It's not just a slight irritation her skin flares up alarmingly hence the query about Germany.

No problem this year in the moselle valley area, however last year staying at allianz stadium in Munich we had real problems with our son getting about 30 bites overnight in August.

We cycled the Moselle ,Danube as well as Rhine and Saar and mozzies were not a big problem . At dawn and dusk we take precautions and during the day use repellant ....mainly to repel ticks which can be a problem in the early summer . Stay away from long grass and do a regular tick check in forested areas . We will be heading that way again in mid May .

Well sorry but got to disagree, we were at cairngorm gliding club Feshiebridge last October, weather was fine and there were loads of mozzies. They weren't midges, but mozzies, confirmed by the locals.

Germans do not tolerate Mozzies, Flies, or Gnats. Ever since ze kreig ve have been plagued by Mosquitos so now ve hav zem all shot.

I'm afraid it's my fault, well according to my German daughter in law! First time I went to visit (Bersenbrück, Niedersachsen) I got bitten terribly by mosquitoes. Apparently, they'd never had a problem with them before! Now they get them all the time! I now make sure I use the Avon repellents when I go.

Saw wristbands in The Range today. We bought some in Carrefour a while ago. Didn't have much trouble with mozzies in Germany last spring. Could I suggest Merilyn has a potential allergy situation. She should carry an epipen.

I'm also a 'magnet' for nasty flying things, Smidge is my repellant of choice. Works against all sorts of things.

I also have a head net that I can put over a broad-brimmed hat, got it before I found Smidge, always carry it with me just in case.
