We have always gone toll roads before:Doh:

But we are leaving in a fortnight for Benidorm and we are going to try the none toll roads.

I am a little apprehensive but we are going to try Tonka's route.

Wats Dropbox Tonga?

It's an online storage folder, like the cloud etc.. I have some files on there with the route, stop overs, free water places etc... BUT it's not working and The original is at home on my PC.....

Try again..

I think this now works and will update it a little when I fly home..
Remember Rouen still has the main bridge closed, Program sat nav for Pont de la Arche and it will take you along the old N road..
Also the new toll on the A63 south of Bordeaux is actually 2 lots of €5.30 for a class 2 motorhome...

Normally we travel the route that you have planned above, although we miss Paris by going Rouen, Evereux, Chartres. However, this year we have booked Portsmouth Santander for the first time.

The tolls last year in May for this route, including the Millau bridge, were 150 euros. Coming back, the same route in July, were about 155 euros because the Millau bridge charges go up during the summer months. I think that all tolls will have risen again for this year. There are, however, some good cheap ACSI sites in Millau and staying there a night saves the bridge crossing cost.

Although the cost of the Portsmouth Santander route is more expensive than Eurotunnel or Dover Calais crossings, the overall cost of our usual route, including the tolls, is about the same but we will save about 500 miles each way, wear and tear/mileage on the wagon.

We are still unsure about the Portsmaouth Santander crossing. We are a little concerned about a rough Bay of Biscay trip and might yet cancel in favour of, perhaps, Tonka's route. Have a few weeks yet to finally decide.

When we booked it, the crossing cost, with inside cabins, was about £760 return.

We usually follow the Tonka route, check the weather this time of year if you use the Somport tunnel, the access from the French side is not the best.
We attempted to use the aire Plan De Eau at Angouleme in August last year but were advised that overnight parking was no longer allowed and the entrance was chained up at night.(maybe a seasonal thing )
We ended up at nearby Nerzac which is a nice village aire with free hookup for 4 units.

I prefer your route, except I would go via Rouen, Chartres to avoid the Paris horriphique, which can all be toll free except the Millau bridge, which is worth the toll for the view. :thumb:

I went this route last year...I bypassed Rouen to the west side...and not liking long tunnels I went to Biarritz then turned left to Pamplona...nice route with lots of toll /non toll options.

Yes, go via Rouen. If your toll budget is limited this is what I would do. Set your sat nav to avoid tolls until you are 20 miles prior to Rouen. Then accept tolls to get past Rouen. Look carefully at the map to figure out how to do this, it's not straight forward with the road works that were there during 2015.

After that avoid tolls until you get north of Tours. Take the toll from here until you are south of Poitiers. It's a pig to get between those two cities sometimes.

Then take your pick. The N10 is expensive if you are class 3.

Calais - Rouen - Chartes - Straight down N10 to Bordeaux, Mont de Marsden - Somport Tunnel - Huesca - Zarragoza - Valencia - Benidorm... All toll free..

Do it regular in motorhome and car....

We go to Benidorm like you to Bordeaux but carry on until Capbreton then on the A63 motorway to San Sebastian then A15 to Pamplona. From here the 121 and the 232 to Zaragoza then onto the A23 free motorway to Sagunt. Then the A7 around Valencia and onto Benidorm.

The original route i posted is for "fair weather" In winter there can be problems at Someport so like you we use the A63 down to Irun and make decision depending on the weather. The N121A Irun to Pamplona is a good road, popular with trucks so you know it's big enough...

Yes. It is now :(
I did put (toll) after those sections.. Maybe it's not clear enough..
As you may know, can be done toll free down there but not an easy or nice route...
I will have to get an up to date costing on the tolls from Bordeaux to Irun..
Last trip was in the car so toll fee's not the same..

The main issue is the A63/N10 from south of Bordeaux...
Used to be free before it went toll, there is not much in the way of good alternative running alongside as you often find in France.
We went that way on route to the Morocco 2014 adventure, Although mine is 4250kg and a touch over 3mtr I got away with class 2, however poor old Canopus was following and got stung big time in his Concorde.. !!!

The N10 tolls can be avoided apparently, there was a thread about it very recently.
