Hi All
I recently saw a hook up cable where the plug at the van end had 13 amp type socket on the top as part of the plug that you could plug an extension lead into.
Anyone seen one of these and could tell me where I could get one ?
Thanks

I'd like to see it. A 13 amp socket would not be protected at 13 amps as the lead is designed to plug into a 16 amp outlet.

You could

it was definitely the van end of the hook up lead that the lead went into with a british style 3 pin socket as part of it

Can't say it's something I've heard of.
Is it something like:

Yes, they exist.
Saw them advertised somewhere a while back.
Think it was fleabay.
The socket plugs into the van as normal, leaving a 3 pin socket on top.

I'd like to see it. A 13 amp socket would not be protected at 13 amps as the lead is designed to plug into a 16 amp outlet.

Surely the 13a fuse would protect what ever was plugged in to it?
Little different to an external 13a socket?

Given that it's going to be used outside in all weather conditions, I'd be more concerned about the IP rating of the 13A socket

Many vans have an external mains socket.
How is this so different?

The thing exists.
I've seen it advertised.

So why can't google find it.
Many people have asked about such a thing and never found anything but the schucko I listed.

The schuko I listed is Ip44 rated as it is recessed , a 13 amp plug/socket would let water dribble straight onto the pins

Purpose made external 13 amp units like the Bullfinch allow the lid to be closed with the plug in.

All hook up connections should comply to IP44 (That means they are splash proof and resist the entry of any particle bigger than 1mm). To be honest I can't see those piggy back things attaining that standard for the water protection.
Yes, I have seen them abroad, but wouldn't use one personally. I have a separate 13A IP44 socket outlet on the side of my van which is fed from the main consumer unit which has RCD protection.

Techno,
I've seen them advertised, as has obviously the OP.
The safety elements are another story.
They do (or did) exist.

We double posted there. I am surprised that a horizontal schuko is IP44, but if it says it is then it is(y)

Well that fleabay ad says 'camping' as part of the title. That's the clue. In a tent, the socket part would be inside the tent, the 3 pin plug would be on your electrical appliance you have taken with you, unless your tent isn't waterproof what's your prob?

If you are taking British electrical appliances to use inside or outside the van in good weather then just plug an extension lead into the van somewhere and trail it outside. Then unplug the thing and put it all away after use. Don't leave it outside if there's a risk of rain.

I think the schuko version is a lot neater and will fit under the flap, the UK version looks as though it will not from the picture. A lot of our stuff has european plugs anyway so the schuko is as convenient, we have plenty of adaptors of various sorts anyway.

The one Jock shows is an inline adapter or a hook up post adapter. It won't plug into the van inlet

One thing to remember is that the IP rating refers to the item itself.
The connector in post Number 2 may well be IP44 but only with the lid over the Schuko socket closed. As soon as you open the lid water can enter the socket unless you insert a schuko plug which also HAS to be IP44 rated, such as this one .
An IP44 socket with a non IP44 plug in MAY cease to be IP44. The Bullfinch 13A socket with the closeable cover remains IP44 even with a non IP44 plug in it (so long as the lid is closed). IMO the schuko in post 2 no longer complies to IP44 with a non IP44 plug in it as it is no longer properly covered against water ingress.
Unfortunately the regulations do not cover all eventualities so care is needed when using these connectors outdoors.

CAK Tanks are experts on these sort of things - if it exists they will probably know how/where to get one(y) If a Google search doesn't find something it doesn't mean that it doesn't exist just that it may not be described on website listings as you have input. Sometimes a good idea to search on Google Images too so you can spot the item from a photo then get a link to the relevant website :)

Oh yes it does Andy otherwise I wouldn't be using it. ;) I didn't buy it for decoration purposes.

The blue round protector cap slides in nicely (horizontally) over the top of the MH inlet, ie under the outer flap

I swapped both the blue ends round and reconnected them, so as not to damage the side wall of the MH with the UK square pin socket end.

Cheers for now,

Jock.
