Rotten wood should ALWAYS be removed before the rot spreads. Rot is a fungus and even when it dries out the spores will spread, cut it out, leave long enough to dry right out then replace it with new treated timber. Treat whatever is left with a specialist timber treatment. Leave the cladding off long enough to prove you have cured the leak and for surrounding areas to dry.

False economy.
Best ripped out and replaced with new wood. But use quality hardwood and not cheap crap soft wood which i'm betting the orginals are(?). Manufacturers do things like this to keep the costs down, and people don't ever see battens........until like you they find damp and rip the panel off.

I'm so pleased I have a quality German 'van which is constructed from aluminium sandwich material. No wood anywhere in the exterior body construction to go rotten. Sorry, don't mean to come over as 'smug' but I now see the point of paying more for a quality item.

Dont you beleive it,,

At least with "Stumpy`s" and the wood framed build you do have the chance of replacing rotten parts and the wood,,

Sandwich construction is known to break down and delaminate,, there is no quick fix if this happens,, it can be a major job.. I know I had it happen on a modern caravan..
Big flat bubbles that just got bigger and bigger..

A lot of caravans and MH`s do have wood all round the corners,, even sandwich construction`s,,

Any water ingress can start rot and delamination,,

Best to nip it in the bud..

Check your corners and seals,, at least once a year..especially the sealant around your roof and gutters.. the most common area for seals breaking down is on caravans which frequently use an awning the preasure and strain put on the awning channel in windy conditions is tremendous,. The awning rail/channel is only held on by a few screws and a bit of sealant..

Sealant that is not cleaned frequently will get moss growing and the roots of moss are very strong and will find it`s way in the smallest crevise,, try pulling up a bit of moss from in between close butted paving and see how far the roots go down..

Just my two penneth..

Hi Stumpy, some years ago I had a rotten window cill on the house and with winter in full bloom did not want to start ripping things about. In my local builders merchants I found a product that one painted/soaked the rotten timber with, which after a few hours turned the soft timber into something resembling teak,ie rock hard. Then when all was dry, a quick coat of polyester filler and paint and it looked ok. still no probs with it 6 years later.

When it was eventually ripped out due to replacement with UPVC windows the timber was still solid. Cannot think what it was called but I have seen similar product in B&Q .
May be worth a look round the outlets. Regards Badger1

I do...I've been to the factory in Germany and seen 'em built - def no wood! The alum. sandwich material is stated to be guaranteed 'good for 20 years.' But, hey, when you've shelled out as much for a M/H as for a small house, you expect something special.

Big difference and not a good comparison.

A small house, even modern build crap, will not only last a heck of a lot longer than 20 years, it's an appreciating asset unlike any m/h or rv which depreciates in value from day one.

A small house will cost anywhere around £120 - 150k. Anyone spending that amount on a m/h or rv either has money to burn, or needs their head examining.

I guess that describes me, then, on both counts!...except the amount spent was higher than your figures...but it matters not: 1) I'm having a blast and 2) We're spending the kids inheritance...and furthermore - they approve! :thumb:

Hi, I bought Hymer quality a few years ago and it lasted 7 months. The delamination was so bad they took it back and gave me another. I sold this very soon as this quality is crap in my eyes.

Brilliant! Well put - everyone has the right to spend WHAT THEY WANT TO, whether its on a motorhome or anything else!! Your Concorde is a fab motorhome and I wish you well with it - its certainly not up to anyone here or anywhere else to pass judgements on what people spend on motorhomes - not all motorhomers want to buy an elderly cheap motorhome and can spend very high amounts on their lifestyle of choice, while others may want to restore a much cheaper option, but no-one has the right to dictate or pass judgement on the motorhome choice of others, whatever the costs may be!!

Have a blast in your Concorde and ignore the appearance of the Little Green Man who has a habit of surfacing from time to time!!!:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
