Sometimes watch cookery programs like "Food Heroes" and wondered where on earth do you buy Mutton, Salt Marsh Lamb or beef from Highland Cattle and such delicacies?

Well salt Marsh lamb is easy, I get mine from Dewi Roberts in Llandeilo. Its a 50min trip for me but well worth it. Had a leg from hom last week and it was delicious.

One of the first places to look is the internet, there are now lots of 'farmers market' type sources these days and many advertise on the internet. Availability is good but you need to be able to trust them to chose a nice piece.

Cheers

Best of luck.

We saw mutton on sale in the Kirkgate indoor market at Leeds a few weeks ago. Haven't seen it anywhere else for years.

Hi!

Is there any musulman community in your surroundings? If so , you might find mutton and lamb there, as they not allowed to eat porc. Usually they have very good meat. It might be worth asking.

Thanks for the tips. Haven't been to Leeds market for years.
It's interesting as we like to try different things to eat when we are away, at the moment into Venison steaks and Ostrich, luvverly. :thumb:

Holidayed in Dumfries and Galloway for many years at Newton Stewart (pre m/home days) Used to be able to get Galloway beef (Beltie) steaks in the Bruce Hotel they were superb then they went onto ordinary sirloins, nice but not as tasty. Also saw many sheep grazing on the salt marshes along the Solway but never saw Salt Marsh Lamb on sale anywhere in the area. :Eeek:

Try a quality Butcher. Apart from mutton you won't find it sold in many Supermarkets if any at all.

M&S however do stock cuts of Highland cattle beef. Not the very best i've tasted but it's 'passable'.

There's a guy who does some of the north east farmers markets - including Stockton and Richmond - who sells venison and buffalo meat. Not sure about ostrich but I don't think so.

Venison is easy enough Asda sell it or butchers in Stockton. Ostrich we got from Aldi on a "special" Buffalo burgers easy enough from the deli in Saltburn stn square.

We tried Ostrich on a whim as we'd never tried it ,luvverly. There is a farm between Stokesley and G Ayton rears Ostrich but never seen in the shops.
Many farms now rear Ostrich and Buffalo, very tasty and good for you as very low in fat but rarely seen in shops. Can only guess it's reared for markets abroad due to British reticence to try anything "new"?
