In summer there are catering facilities (snacks/pizza) adjacent & a Boulangerie van passes in the mornings. A quiet location but little shade. Raclet borne with drainage grid.

REVIEW

2007 A very nice Aire on the shores of a large lake. The owners of the nearby pizzeria are very friendly & hospitable (& they cook a 'mean' pizza). It is possible to swim in the lake & walk in the nearby woods. Play area adjacent. Very peaceful & quiet at night. The parking is very popular in good weather & at weekends.

Ahh, a subject close to my heart.....

Stay in the aire in Avize (it's in the aires book) then visit the champagne museum in Le Mesnil sur Oger. The museum is fantastic (really) and from memory about 8 euro each for the tour including tasting :)

Broken Link Removed

Ask for Nicholas (silent s) he is really helpful. We went there last November and again just a few weeks ago. Their champagne is superb and costs around £14 a bottle.

The aire is only a convenient stopover but it is quiet. Another place to visit is the champagne college in Avize itself (about 200 yards from the aire) we have not visited but they do free tours and subsidised champagne.

If it helps you my blog shows a few places in the area worth visiting....

Enjoy your visit, I'm jealous already :):)

DIRECTIONS: From EAST take D7 into town. Turn LEFT @ boulangerie (Signposted Aire) & follow road for 200m to AIRE.

SITE DESCRIPTION This municipal aire is located at the edge of the Loire on the western side of this small town in a large gravel parking area surrounded by grass areas. There is some shade here under trees, the aire is lit at night & it is 1km from the centre of town. Large marked spaces with grass adjacent. There is an Artisanal service point & drainage platform. Good range of shops in town as well as some eating places.

REVIEW:

A very quiet location with little shade & about 1km from the centre of this rural town, next to a forest with several walks/ cycle trails. Chateau within 500m. Large gravel parking area, easy to manoeuvre but access is via a narrow chicane bordered by rocks which may present problems to large vehicles.

TYPE OF AIRE: MUNICIPAL

DIRECTIONS: Approaching from the NORTH on N7, turn off at BRIARE onto N2007 towards town. Turn RIGHT after crossing CANAL & follow road alongside canal to AIRE.

SITE DESCRIPTION A new aire was opened next to the canal in late 2009. The services are Flot Bleu with a large drainage platform. There are a couple of pleasant spots for a stopover, both are close to the famous "Pont-Canal" (a canal bridge over the Loire river), the first is just 200m east of the "Pont", alongside the canal with parking on tarmac in a peaceful spot (N47.63417, E02.74000) & the second is 100m south of the "Pont" on the east bank of the Loire in a tree lined spot with parking on gravel next to grass areas (N47.63167, E02.73995). Both locations are about ½ km from the town centre & its shops.

REVIEW:

The parking is very good -- we parked under the Pont Canal, next to another canal & overlooking the River Loire. To get here follow signs for Pont Canal & cross over road bridge at eastern end of Pont, large parking area is 100m on right.

BRIARE, Green Flags are parking places

we used the canalside aire in Briare just over the bridge from main aire and on the right .

OPENING TIMES: 01/04 -- 31/10

GPS COORDS: N47.67004 E02.80885

DIRECTIONS: Exit A77 @ Jcn 10 & take N7 SOUTH & D47 to OUZOUER-SUR-TREZEE. On entering village turn LEFT over canal & AIRE is immediately on LEFT

SITE DESCRIPTION: This excellent Aire is in a tarmac car park with marked spaces as well as further parking on gravel with adjacent grass verges (little shade) - next to the village hall & the canal. Showers & WC's are provided (1/04 -- 31/10) & there is also an adjacent park with a children's play area. Close to the centre of village & shops. Modern artisanal service point with separate taps & a separate hook up terminal -- 4 sockets.

REVIEW
1)This place was very clean & quiet but unfortunately there was no electric when we visited & the showers were closed, but it all looked very nice. The borne is well designed & practical -- with the parking nicely positioned near to the canal -- certainly one of the better aires.

2) "On the banks of a river, a small aire with 5 spaces on tarmac surrounded by bushes -- all is free including showers." RECOMMENDED CAMPING-CAR MAGAZINE

3)"Signs indicating motorhomes were not to use any facility but the showers were open. Nice spot" Martin Cheesman

Talking of 'fizz', since we saw a program on boating on TV, when it was pointed out that a lot of french drink not champagne, but Cremant, then we tried it and find it very tasty. There are various Cremants, we normally get Cremant de Loire, about €6 a bottle.

A couple of other places to visit

Aire: ORADOUR SUR GLANE (5*)
ADDRESS: RUE DU STADE, OFF D9

TEL: 05 55 03 10 01 FAX:

EMAIL:

TYPE OF AIRE: MUNICIPAL
FACILITIES: WATER /GREY DRAIN/ BLACK DRAIN / ELECTRIC / TOILETS / RUBBISH

LOCATION: SEMI-RURAL NO. OF SPACES: 20

PRICES/ RATES: CASH

PARKING: FREE SERVICES: 2€ WATER OR ELECTRIC

OPENING TIMES: ALL YEAR

GPS COORDS: N45.93565 E01.02479

DIRECTIONS: From LIMOGES take N141 WEST & D9 to ORADOUR SUR GLANE. Proceed thru village on D9 (RUE DE LA LANDE) & just before leaving turn LEFT into AVE DU STADE. Then at end of road - turn RIGHT into RUE DU STADE & AIRE.

SITE DESCRIPTION: The Aire at this historic WWII village & visitor centre is situated at the northern edge of the "new" village (500m from the centre) & about 1km from the ruins of the old village. The aire is a fairly modern purpose built construction (2004) with 10 very large sloping concrete spaces (each taking 2 motorhomes) accessed off a circular tarmac road (reserved for motorhomes), there is no shade but there are toilets, picnic tables, a play area & rubbish bins. The borne is a Raclet with a badly positioned drainage grid.

In June, 1944, just after the D-Day landings, an SS division (that had been attacked by the French Resistance) entered this small village to make an example of the occupants. The 642 villagers were rounded up, massacred & the village destroyed. The village has been kept in the same state as it was on that day as a reminder of the horrors of war. The ruined village can be visited together with a Centre de la Memoire.

REVIEW

1) A well arranged & well maintained aire but not the best of designs -- the spaces are quite sloping (ramps required) & the grey drainage at the borne is hopeless, otherwise the location is quite quiet but not very convenient for the ruins or the Centre de la Memoire. There are WC's & washbasins on the aire (no showers), as well as a barbeque & play area. The aire is signposted in the village.

2) A good facility in a nice open location overlooking a wooded area, but we found that quite a few of the spaces had been taken by cars when we visited in August. A fascinating & quite moving place to visit.

3) A good aire but it was full when we visited so we stayed in one of the car parks at the southern side of the new village -- a lot more convenient for visiting the martyr village but no facilities here. Quite quiet at night & an easy walk to the shops & restaurants. Car parks get very full as the day progresses so best to arrive early or late after the cars have gone.

4) "An impeccable aire in a pleasant wooded environment". CAMPING-CAR MAGAZINE RECOMMENDED

DIRECTIONS: Entering town from SOUTH on D939, take 1st EXIT at ROUNDABOUT & then next LEFT. AIRE is on LEFT after 100m.

SITE DESCRIPTION This municipal aire is situated close to the town centre in a very large level field in the south west of the town. The field is accessed by a gravel track off the road with some shade under mature trees around the edges & parking also possible next to the river -- all pitches are on grass. The aire is only 300m from the town centre with its good variety of shops & weekly market. Artisanal service point with platform drain.

REVIEW: 2011 A very large, quiet & popular aire with spaces on grass (difficult when wet). Close to shops. Very picturesque & historic town. Official calls in morning to collect fees.

DIRECTIONS: From NIORT take D9 WEST 10km & D1 NORTH over river into COULON. In town centre, turn LEFT onto D123 (ARCAIS) & AIRE is on LEFT after 500m.

SITE DESCRIPTION: The aire is located in the large gravel parking area on the western edge of town that is used for visitors to the town & tourists who are hiring the boats on the river. The parking is level, mainly on grass, with little shade & is quite convenient; being only 100m from the river & 200m to the centre of town & its shops. Town is very nice & quite tourist oriented -- being a popular place to hire boats on the Marais Poitevin, an area of canals & marshes -- one of the largest wetland areas in France. Artisanal service point with drainage platform is 100m from parking.

REVIEW:

1) CAMPING CAR MAGAZINE RECOMMENDED : "Magnificent aire on the banks of the river".

2) The parking here is very busy, being used by the patrons of the hire boats on the river but it empties out in the evening & becomes a very pleasant location next to the river. A lovely old town with good shops & there is a footpath from the parking to the river & it also follows alongside the river making a very nice walk

Quick update.
Thanks very much to everyone for all your info.
Did Avize and local market. Cycled to Mesnil but unfortunately museum was fully booked while we were in the area with coach parties!.
Anyway we stayed at great aire near river at Mareuil sur Ay and sampled local production of both champagne and cremant. Have a small supply for xmas and new year and a bottle for our 21 anniversary next week!
Good aire at Arrigny port de Chantecoq with a 25km bike ride round lake.
Also visited Troyes, an impressively historic city before moving on to Langres and Dijon. Now have "historic half timbered house" overload.
Currently sheltering from the weather by the rivers edge at Digoin. Nice spot with plenty of parking.
Hope to visit a couple more recommended spots on the journey south.
Thanks again for your knowledge.
Hope it stops raining soon!
