Only if you really want to......... Not needed anymore. Another wonderfully thought through piece of French legislation that was ignored by the locals and subsequently canned.

Got chatting to a Brit on Le Shuttle who's lived in France for ten years. Said the Gendarmerie don't support it and don't stop people out of principle. So many people against it in France that you can't buy them in most places apparently :)

€6 fine for not carring one but the offence isnt enforcible so in effect no offence committed.

I believe the French shelved the idea quite a while ago.

But they do still have drink driving laws so you can still lose your licence if over the limit that I believe is Lower than the uk

Drink driving Laws in France
France has very strict drink driving laws . You are allowed a maximum of 0.5mg/ml of alcohol per litre in your blood, compared to 0.8mg/ml in the UK.

Sanctions and Penalties for Drink driving in France
If you have between 0.5 and 0.8mg of alcohol in your blood you could be fined between €135 to €750. You will not be allowed to drive until the alcohol level drops to 0.5mg. Refer to the grid for more precise information.

If you have more than 0.8mg of alcohol in your blood, you will have to take your test. The policemen have the right to stop any driver at random to check a driver’s papers and carry out an alcohol test.

The OP related to whether you needed a breathalyser kit or not in France

I don't think anybody has been advocating driving after drinking

As the law stood in France even if you were tee total you would have had to carry a tester

I think the French were looking at saving money by not using their own testers, cant imagine ever going through a court process on the back of a 99p test though!!

But as already qualified not now needed in France

Must admit I make my sons take one with them if they are going to parties and staying over and driving the next day.

That's the daft part - while technically an offence not to carry them, there is no fine or other "punishment",

No! Not even! In fact only the Police's breathalyzers were used to test a driver!
This law (apart from being a new business) was voted to prevent .....mainly....the week end accidents with the younger ones .. after parties and dancing nights. They could test themselves , and for some it worked! For others , they carried on drinking AND driving! I believe it did save a few lives...
