I recently updated my map and noticed some strange directions.

I suspect that when there are roadworks and diversions in place TomTom accepts the diversion as being the updated way to travel. As a consequence of this I seem to be taken on the convoluted diversion route even after the roadworks have been completed.

Is this just my imagination or is it a problem for others?

If that's the only problem you've had Bernard you're lucky, after the last 'update' the map wouldn't fit on my XL. No amount of techy contact sorted it so I fixed it myself......on the garage floor with a two pound lump hammer!
The problem you report is one I experienced with mine, together with temporary speed cams which became permanent. Grrrr!
