Map Coordinates??? (1 Viewer)

Greetings,

I've been wrestling with the various means of putting map coordinates into various pieces of tech. equipment.

I've managed to get the right place using Degrees, Minutes and Seconds but I've noticed that there is another method of writing down Coordinates eg. N 39.55720 W -7.99237.

Could someone explain to me how that is transposed onto say Garmin or Google Maps,(or similar) (other SatNav devices are available)

Your figures are decimal degrees. There are a number of websites where you can enter these and will convert to degrees \ minutes \ seconds and vice versa.
Eg http://www.onlineconversion.com/map_decimaldegrees.htm - http://rechneronline.de/geo-coordinates/ - http://andrew.hedges.name/experiments/convert_lat_long/

There are actually three ways to display/enter
Degrees:mins:Seconds
Degrees: decimal minutes
decimal Degrees
The different satnavs often allow you to choose which to use. Different books use different methods.

The garmin will allow you to enter it either way just chane the format

I get the wife to do all that ,I just drive and enjoy the scenery,we sometimes get it wrong ,but hey ,just chill your on holiday and you find some very interesting places when you don't know where you are

To convert the co-ordinates into the format above just divide the last number by 60 i.e.
N39.53.663, divide 53.663 by 60 which equals 0.89438. the co-ordinates now are N39.89438. The websites are handy as well though, thanks Gellyneck
