Our shower head is knackered, so I unscrewed the offending article and measured it. Simples I thought. No it flipping isn't.

Standard 1/2" fittings won't be 1/2" in any dimension if you measure them, and this can cause confusion. Many customers will be sure they don't have standard fittings since they measured their existing shower head or shower arm and they measured around 5/8" or 3/4". But most 1/2" male fittings will actually measure about 0.8" in outside diameter, and 1/2" female fittings will be around 1" outside diameter. (Why is this the case? For the same reason that in lumber a 2x4 isn't actually 2" x 4". Someone decided a long time ago that is how it would be, and that was that.)

hi dawn, take it you are talking bathroom fittings, not mh. you are referring to the standard sizes in british standard pipe thread ie 1/2 inch bsp is .825 '' outside diam and a tapping drill size for 1/2 inch bsp is 3/4 inch..
that's just the standard..
the timber sizes you mention ie 2x4 will come in at that in undressed timber but dressed or planed comes in under 2x4...
all just standards we use in this country (y)

Do what I did - take the old one with you when looking at buying the new one. Simples (like me)

I have it on good authority that it means "I'm ready big boy, come and get it".

Or "I've got a headache, come near me and you're a dead duck".

Drakes are very confused creatures.

Mostly the latter, in my experience - found out to my cost.

It's the nominal internal diameter of the pipe (male thread). Doesn't help much when looking at a female thread though :)

BSP British standard pipe is measuring the internal dia of the pipe. Timber (or Lumber in the USA) is measured in inches or mm but only sawn is exact size planed is smaller. (4 x 2 sawn minus whatever the take off to clean it up) Yanks always say 2 x 4 and Brits 4 x 2. It is just because they are awkward.

Just take your old shower head to b and m or poundstrecher or some other pound shop and just check it against the ones there, loads cheaper than eBay

Dawn,

DIY = Don't........Involve........Yourself.

If you measure a piece of timber, lay it down, don't measure it stood on end.
That will give you the length, not the height.

Complicated, eh?
