If i join my 2 leisure batteries into a 24v connection (+to- etc) will this damage my charger to the batteries ?

Without knowing what charger you have -I would assume you have a 12v charger so yes it could kill the charger and or damage your vans electrics -or simply shut the charger down/blow a fuse --If you must have 24v then disconnect the charger/check your chargers output or buy another that does duel voltage

Yes Bill two batts connect + to + will be seen as one bigger battery -Depending on the size of your charger it will take a bit longer to reach full (y)-A small charger may struggle to charge batts to full capacity-as a rule of thumb you need aprox 1 amp hr to every 10 amps of batt size == a 12 amp hr charger will charge 120 amp battery -but since you only go down to 50% discharge =240 amphr worth of batts

The charger size is just a guide Bill (y) for optimum performance --even small chargers may keep your batts charged simply because they keep banging in charge -some small intelligent chargers may baulk at bigger battery banks while others just get on with it :) a case of suck it and see -
I am coming around on Solar panels -mainly because the wife is not around to stop me - but they are reasonably cheap now and would cut the need for me to hook up at home (always have done)but find myself hooking one van up and forgetting the other only to find the alarms etc are flattening the batteries on the none hooked up van --always been against Solar as I have never needed it but now it's only a hundred quid ish I may have to look into it more closely :D or I may PM Tecno and save myself the bother (just pick his brains on the subject):D:LOL:

it was techno who guided me terry i am going to get the relay he recommended and have the inverter straight into the mains so when not on hookup my sockets will still be live @240v the 80amp solar is around 70quid but dont forget all the other bits to go with it fixing brackets charge controller cable etc so far i think im at about 130quid still very good i reckon

You can get 12v to 24v DC convertors, but they are not cheap and I doubt anything affordable could handle the current required by an inverter. Here is a small one: Broken Link Removed

Hi terry
I have a 10amp controller going spare if you want it ?
Thanks :) but as yet I have no idea if it would be any good for me (y) or if it would sit in my garage gathering dust -I need to do some homework on Solar (or simply pick others brains:D) to see if I need rather than want it -I have Ann nagging in my head as I type  there are a few things I want in my own build rather than need ;)I have some nice goodies to put in and all the stuff except the fridge and loo plus windows so after buying the van it will not cost that much :D

terry the reason i am going now for solar and a inverter is because i am fed up with having to start the genny everytime linda wants to use her straighteners and its no good me explaining to her why the sockets dont work wen not on ehu so i is cheaper to put this stuff in that explaining lol

Bill

Was that the same inverter we were discussing on another thread? Sorry it did not work out for you.

I think you want to get as much solar power as you can. They are very cheap and you can often find larger ones are not much more expensive. I got two 100W panels plus additional 10m of cable and two joiners for £190 from memory. And since you are up on the roof anyway and having to drill a hole in the roof you may as well fit two

I am glad you have solved the problem of having to explain why the sockets don't work to your wife.
You will now have more time to your self.
Unless of course you spend it explaining why the batteries are flat;)

My other half uses 12v hair straighteners & she reckons they're as good as her mains ones, cost £11(y)
