Get her to turn down the heat setting just a notch, that will help with power consumption...
1600w at 12v is 133 amps in an hour or 2.2 amps a minute....
Hope you have a good battery and a good re-charge system..

Took me years but finally completed the "training" in our van :winky:

You have a choice between modified sine wave and pure sine wave, it makes quite a difference to the price.

My choice would be pure sine as it runs everything without any problems, the modified sine can sometimes have problems running things with electronic circuits in.

We have a 2kw Merlin from RoadPro and very happy with it, no probs with the batteries.

Just for the benefit of University Challenge and QI viewers, INVERTER is the correct spelling when used in an electrical context!:roflmto:

Back to the subject matter though, we have a Ring 2100 watt unit. Although not a pure sine wave inverter, it runs a hairdryer, hair straighteners, kettle, compressor, laptop charger, phone chargers and an electric whisk with no problems!
As previously mentioned, there are items which need pure sine wave, but we haven't come across such an item that meets that requirement.
Apparently microwaves need pure sine wave inverters.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jon

Our microwave lit up and made a noise like a microwave on modified sine wave but that was about it, and the Nespresso machine switched on and warmed up but that was it certainly no coffee.

Changed to pure sine and the microwave is now better on inverter 240v than it was in Spain/France on 220v or whatever they use, Nespresso works a treat.

Peak levels can be typically double the continuous so you MIGHT be looking at a 750watt unit.

Also nice to have a remote start/stop panel then you can put the inverter as close as possible to the batteries and control it remotely.

1000W/1200W/1500W is the peak output power of this inverter. The continuous output / rated output power is about 50%~60% of the peak power. That is to say, continuous output/rated output power of 1500W inverter is below 800W, and the peak power is 1500W.

Got to read the small print.

No good for 1200W hair dryer, you need at least 3000W form somebody who is describing the item by its Peak or surge rating.

I know many Funsters have purchased reasonable inverters at a fairly low price but in my experience it is often false economy to buy cheap. Since you want something to handle quite a high load, my recommendation would be to stretch to a decent brand. If you are running a 1200 watt hair dryer, that will cause the inverter to draw over 100 amps from the batteries. Leaving aside the issue of battery drain, that is a huge current flowing and I would not want to trust anything other than quality equipment. Good makes are Sterling, Weaco, Victron to name a few. Assuming you don't want to pay the premium for a pure sine wave model, a quasi (or modified) sine wave inverter from one of the makes above is going to cost between £200 - £300. Here is an example that will handle a bit more than you are proposing:
Broken Link Removed

One final point - I would not consider connecting the inverter to the batteries with croc clips. For dependable, safe operation it should be connected direct to the battery terminals with heavy-guage cable terminating in eyes that can be bolted to the battery posts. There should be a fuse and a switch (relay) in line to protect and operate the inverter. Many good quality large inverters will come with a suitable switch.

If it is just for a hair dryer then a modified sine way will do. I have just bought and fitted tBroken Link Removed. It came from Germany and works well with wife's dryer (my instructions too!). Hers is a 1200W model. It looks very well built and solid and the cables it comes with are quadruple wired heavy duty cable. Of course only time will tell if it is reiable, but all looks godd at the moment.
