there isnt really anything to service on the 12v side.....if a fault develops the fuse blows.

230v mains electric ideally needs checking and testing annually but should be done during a habitation check.

Correct.. not a lot to service.. mostly checks..
From Habitation check list sheet.. http://www.readcaravans.com/workshop/aws_motorhome_checklist.pdf

Most, if not all can be done by a reasonably competent person ..

12V ELECTRICS

Check that the leisure battery is being charged by the engine and mains charger

Fridge - check operation

Interior lighting & equipment - check operation

Leisure battery - check security, electrolyte level & lubricate terminals

Wiring earths & fuses - inspect condition & correct fuse rating

Electric awning & step - check condition & operation

External socket - check condition & operation

230v Mains.. Different story.. they should be checked by a qualified electrician ..

MAINS ELECTRICS
ADDITIONAL WORK. SERVICE INFORMATION. SAFETY STATEMENT

Inlet plug - inspect

Hook-up cable - check if available

Earth bonding - test

Metal surfaces bonded - check

RCD operation - test

Socket outlets & permanent connections - carry out visual & functional check

Appliances fitted e.g.: air conditioning - check operation

It's funny really, because 12V electrics off a lead acid battery are probably more dangerous than 230V electrics. Everyone is scared of the volts, but it is the amps that cause actual fires that actually kill and it is the high currents required by the low voltage that cause those.

It is why the 230V UK gets a fraction of the electrically caused deaths of the 110V USA. Hardly anyone gets electrocuted in either case, but loads get killed by the higher currents that are much harder to protect against because the maximum earth loop current is so much closer to the operating current that fuses and breakers are less effective.

Remember when playing with lead acid batteries that they are much more dangerous than a mains socket.
