Hi, we are 2.5 weeks into an 8 week french tour and currently at Arcachon generally heading for Carcassonne, Avignon and then upwards to Annecy( by 21/6)
Would greatly appreciate any top tips on sites and/aires or stopovers any funsters have enjoyed in the past as want to savour the journey not just the main destinations. many thanks

You could try Fontet on the Garonne amongst the vineyards or go into the Pyrenees, we have stayed at Oloron Sainte Marie aire and Laruns aire, both free. You'll find them in All The Aires book or www.campingcar-infos.com

We are heading to Arcachon tomorrow and will eventually end up in Carcasonne for Bastille day and the Tour de France in July. Where did you stay in Arcachon, any recommendations? We are looking at France Passion, ACSI and All the Aires trying to decide ::bigsmile:

The Aire at the marina in Gruissan near Narbonne is a good one. You have to pay to use it but it's right beside the sea and also near the town. There's a good cave in Gruissan where they have a good selection of wine. We also stayed at an ACSI site on the road from Narbonne to Gruissan. Can't remember the full name but it's a Yello! site. Fabulous facilities. Brilliant pool and each pitch is surrounded by hedges and very large.
Happy travels!

We ended up at La Foret which though a bit tired was brilliant for access to dune Pilat....as long as your knees and lungs are up to climbing a 400 rung metal ladder laid on the side of the dune plus another 50 foot scramble across sand to the top. Fantastic experience- enjoy your time there.

Hi we stayed at Annecy a few years ago and thought it was lovely, we didn't use the Aire although we had a look and it was right next to the town center but I'd say get there early as it was busy. That was end of July though.

If you want to go a wee bit further up try this Aire Broken Link Removed

This was a lovely Aire had a bakers van each morning and pizza and roast chicken van several nights.

The extensive parking area just outside the walls of Carcassonne incorporates a barrier-controlled MH only area where you can stop overnight. Services are limited - we emptied the bog but never found the water tap. It can get hotter than Hades on a sunny day in August but it's within walking distance of the old town, and there may even be a shuttle bus.

At Avignon I'd forget the noisy squalid looking aire under the Pont Edouard Daladier and stay at Camping Bagatelle (43.95313,4.799062) which is a couple of hundred yards away on the same bank of the river. You get a discount with a Camping Card International (green card). It's worth taking a look at the old town and the distinctive Pont d'Avignon in the evening from the river bank outside the campsite:

If you go on the Pont d'Avignon it's compulsory to dance, and to sing the following traditional ditty:

"Sur le Pont d'Avignon,
'cos the TomTom got it wrong."

In the immediate vicinity of Avignon you have Nimes, Arles, Aigues Mortes, and Uzes.

Nimes and Arles have largely complete (though modernised) Roman Amphitheatres, and Arles has the Van Gogh connection. Aigues Mortes is a quaint walled town sticking out of the Camargue salt marshes - it got its grim sounding name from all the insect-borne diseases they caught there in Medieval times. Uzes has a quaint and attractive market place, and more importantly a HARIBO FACTORY where you can watch sweeties being made and sample them. The Papal palace at Avignon is a very impressive building, as is the view from the nearby gardens on the hill. Near Remoulins you've got the Pont du Gard, which is an awesome structure.

If you have the time it's worth hanging a left at Montelimar and visiting the Ardeche Gorge near Vallon Pont d'Arc, although it may be a bit busy at this time of the year.

The Med coast between Carcassonne and Aigues Mortes is for the most part modern post-war resorts built to boost southern French tourism - we gave that bit of coast a wide berth on our last visit but maybe others know of some attractions down there.
