Hi
I agree with John's comment -what we really need is more coppers on the beat and less mamby pamby law makers - I will add -allowing the coppers to do their job.
So why should all children be punished because of the few. Its very easy to assume that every person under 20 is a trouble maker. It will also teach them the wrong way of how to go about things. Maybe in twenty years, when they are the decision makers they will devise something that will make todays 40 year olds suffer.
When my eldest son was ten he came home in tears. He had been pushed off his bike by a gang of older youths (12ish yr olds). To him they were much older. I took him back up the road to confront the gang. I have to admit feeling concerned when I realised there was about twenty of them, even though they were only 12 ish.
When they saw me walking up they all ran away. We carried on walking as though we were not interested in them. After 5 minutes we then walked back, this time approaching from behind. The first time they knew we were there I was standing directly behind the leader of the pack. I asked him why he had pushed my son over. He did not know, I asked them why they were all hanging around, he did not know. I said we needed to go to see his mum and dad, he did not have a dad and his mum did not get in until 6pm, he had no where to go between school and 6pm. I said we needed to go to see the police and he begged me not to. There was a burger bar nearby and I bought them all a burger.
The following day my son came home and I asked whether they had given him any trouble. No he said, they want me to be their friend. I asked what he thought and he said he wouldn't. My son grew up taught to finish any fight but not to stop any.
Ipswich, where he grew up is a rough area but he survived and got through to his twenties without any police warnings. When in Canada he did get caught urinating in public and when he cheeked the police they threw him into a cell for the night. The £60 fine on top taught him a lesson but they did not give him a police record, assign him a social worker or even give him any financial benefits, maybes its only the UKs crime gangs that need that. I guess he could sue them for police brutality but then he respects authority and is also educated enough to realise when he has done something wrong.
We have been very lucky with our children. As many of you will know we have started again with Jessica. Even at 2 she knows who is boss. Her latest game is helping herself to the milk from the fridge. We have now got it to a point where she will go to the fridge and stand there until we tell her she can open it.
But for every pound of discipline we give her 5 pounds of love.
If it was up for a vote I personally would vote to do away with these high pitched deterents. Our children are not our enemies they are our future. Lets not round them up with the vermin.
