Snow - Schools closed - complete shambles!!
All the schools are closed in our part of Cumbria because of the snow.
Why??
I'm old enough to remember getting about in the snow in an old Rover shod with crossply tyres. Snow didn't stop us then, we dug ourselves out, and carried on.
I dug my wife's car out of a 3' drift this morning, and de-iced and heated the car with an old fan heater. She then set out to check on her poorly mother who lives 130 miles away west of Paisley, in Scotland. 4 hrs later, she has arrived safely, despite what she describes as pretty appalling conditions.
If she could do it, why can't teachers get to school. or those that live close enough, walk??
Have we all gone soft, so soft in fact that a bit of snow drives everybody back to the safety of their warm homes??
This sort of weather, we are told, will get more and more frequent. As a nation, are we going to let it shut down society as long as it lasts??
People should take the situation head on, and make the best of it. If my pensioner wife and otherswho have the nous can do it, anybody can!!

Well said Doug.
I never missed a day at school because of the weather between 1955 and 1968 - and that was living in the Peak District. For primary school we walked the 1/3 mile up to the top of the hill and down the other side. For secondary (which included the 1962/3 winter) we did the 2 mile journey by bus or walked all or part of the way if they were running late. I'm told that no schools closed in that area in the 1947 winter either.
One factor, of course, was that the staff lived close enough to their places of work to do the same - and didn't rely on cars with no contingency as so many people do these days.
Lets also forget about closing schools because the grounds are snowy and slippy. If schools are closed the pupils will be out playing in the streets - where it is snowy and slippy and no safer.

My eldest sister lost a classmate due to being dropped off by a school bus at the end of her farm road. Poor kid was found frozen to death huddled up in a ball.
Some times we, and I include myself, should think before we type.

Think about what exactly??
Ok so your sisters friend tragically died but for heavans sake people die every day doing the most mundane of things or by pure chance or accident, does that mean we should not speak about anything for the fear of upsetting someone??
Anyway back on thread
The schools closing is a national disgrace and one that this stupid health and safety obsessed nation should hang its head in shame for.
Do you see schools closing in Canada/USA or Russia because if a bit of snow??
No its the stupid H&S idiots waving their rule book at the rest of the brain washed sheep saying that someone might slip and hurt themselves...........no sh+t Sherlock . But what about the kids/teachers getting home, will the snow magically disappear because the H&S brigade worry someone might fall over??
If its snowing and dangerous keep the kids inside
Here in Blackpool EVER SINGLE school closed at lunchtime and sent the kids home, it hasnt snowed since 12.30pm and is now thawing nicely so my daughter has missed out on half a days education for no reason at all but what really pi**es me off is when last year the bloody school sent us a snotty letter moaning about her attendance as she had a days extra holiday because of a flight delay
Wake up Britain....its only a bit of snow

A tragedy, certainly - but avoidable.
My Mum tells a tale from time to time of having to walk two miles to school and the same back over the hills through the snow with other children in the 1930s. My Granddad went with them in the morning and another adult made sure they got home again.

Just looked on the web site for my Grandson's (secondary) school.

Friday Afternoon

Due to the inclement weather and the nature of our activities on a Friday afternoon, we will close at 1.15pm this Friday, 08-01-10.

The forecast for this area for the next couple of days is actually for it to get a bit warmer - not much above freezing but warmer none the less. Flamin' ridiculous. Have these teachers so little about them that they can't think of alternative activities for a couple of hours on Friday afternoon?

Its nothing to do with the teachers or snow on the playground.
The real reason that the schools are closed is to stop all the reckless mothers driving little Johnny to school at insane speeds ignoring everything around them and then abandoning their Chelsea tractors as close as possible to the school right across the pavement packing down the un gritted surface even more
