Steam.....THE FUTURE!
All our worries about depleting sources of oil are over. Good ol' Blighty has the solution right here....

Apparently it only uses 23 cups of tea per second but this is serious cutting edge high tech performance stuff, 'eco' family saloons will run on a thermos flask a day.
Wild....

Not according to this post:
In 1985 a special steam racing car set the world's land speed record for steam cars at the Bonneville salt flats in Utah. It broke the longest standing automotive speed record, that of the Stanley racer at Ormond Beach Florida in 1906. The automotive press completely ignored the setting of this new record, with the single exception of an article in Autoweek some seven years later, hardly apropos.

Read the link Olley.
Bob Barbers attempt in 1985 was never officially recognised due to the fact he only made a single run.
In 1985 one of the Lear turbines found its way into a car which had been brought to the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah, USA for an attempt at the steam powered Land Speed record. Over the course of several years the car progressed from 110 MPH to a measured speed of 145.607 MPH. This was the official speed set by Bob Barber but was not recognized by the FIA.

Hard to get enthusiastic when a 250cc bike would have left it for dead.
It's more a comment on what people with too much money choose to do with it. They should have put it in perspective by having a hot hatch running alongside filming it.

Mallard
I'm totally under-impressed.. what's the big deal ?
Now .. this is impressive ..
Mallard . 165 tons, at 125.88 mph ..
and that's just the loco's weight, The World steam loco record in 1938 and never beaten.
