Default clutch problem on car

hi just wondered if any one can help? i have a 55 reg renault megane 1.5dci. on my way home my clutch clicked and now i have less pedal, biting point is right at the top so as soon as your foot touches the pedal the clutch starts to come on its still working fine but my pedal only has about 1/2 the travel it had. any ideas on the problem? thanks tommy

I'd take a guess at a ball and socket push rod that has jumped out of the ball and is resting on the socket part. Can you see any such push rods ?

But only a guess, I've never seen a Megane clutch. Then again it might be cable operated.

thanks, im not sure but i think it is push rod operated because there seem to be no cable at the back of the pedal. are the ball and socket you mention under the bonnet or will it be behind the pedal somewhere?

I can picture a clutch master cylinder on the bulkhead inside the engine bay and on the passenger side the hole to the piston ( which has the ball socket in it ) with a rod to the clutch pedal. So if the clutch pedal "flirted" back the pushrod could drop out of it's hole.

Or I could be talking bollox, depends if it's your lucky day. Come to think of it, it isn't.

sounds to me like some of the pressure plate 'fingers' have snapped (that would be the click) or the release bearing has callapsed.

Ah now if this was a landrover I would tell you that the clutch release fork pivots on a ball and it has worn through the socket - so the moral is ask me one about a landrover

Hi, it is possible that the fingers on the pressure plate have worn through, and the thrust bearing has advanced to the position that has created a half pedal. Or if its a concentric bearing in the clutch, they have been problematic. Hope this helps.
Craig.
