Doug, at a guess I would say that when you are sitting in the Sunshine having a cold beer/wine then you don't feel the need to go out and spend some money.
Mind you I have NO experience of living abroad for long periods.

I agree with most of the folks on here that Europe is also very expensive but their wages are far superior to ours.

Yes you are correct the children do respect the elder’s be-it there parents or grandparents or people in the village or Town..they will come and shake your hand and say bonjour..( I am not saying in major cities it is the same ! I don't know )
These are s a couple of things that happen, they have a camp fire every year in the village near the main green where they have the village B.B.Q (like the old cubs and scouts) they all sit on straw bails and seats for the elderly around the fire, eating and drinking singing songs...the old typed words of the songs are handed out ( and looking at them they have been well used for many years ) one problem is they may not be all singing the same song, possibly been given the wrong words to the song that most of the villagers are singing, or may-be as the night goes on its not the song sheet that is wrong, it is the wine, but who cares ....and have YOU heard "she will be coming around the mountain" in French...I have,.... many of the songs 50/50 that are sung are half English / American written in French and the rest are French, its smashing this is the whole village young and old.
on other days (every year) the children go up to the community room with the rest of the village and are given a small paper bag with a Brioche bread bun (dry sweet bread bun ) and a few boiled sweets, YOU will NOT believe this, they are over the moon!!..the children will be form 2 years up to about 14 years old.....in England they would be thrown in the dustbin because they wanted a motorbike, computer, TV. computer games, a quad...and so on to make them happy.....the values are different
And yes the people are smashing I find all of them, and they make time to talk to you.

I was at Lac du Bourget in July (just over the hill from Annecy and if you havent been put it on the list its stunning) and it was packed. In one of the picnic areas there was a load of teenagers sitting around a chap with a guitar. They sat and sang along for ages, had a picnic and seemed generally very happy. Can you imagine brit teenagers doing this? In Brittany I got talking to a local brit who told me that the average French wage in that area was 1200 Euros! That was our budget per month in the summer just to run a van across Europe. I might be looking through rosy coloured specticles here but I speak as I find and most of the people we met this summer (especially the French) seemed happy with life and didnt seem obsessed with the latest gadgets, flash cars, wide screen TV's and the like that we (well not me actually) seem to hold so dear!
