Mine does it all by itself although it sometimes askes for the PIN No. This is the last 4 digits of the card number printed on the back of the card

Hiya Keith and Jean - are you going to Lincoln???
We are going to take our Sky+ to Lincoln and see if it will work on a single LNB and try to record. If there is a problem I might invest in a twin LNB then hopefully the Sky+ will work just as it does at home??!!
When we were in Spain we could only receive news on the little suitcase satellite system, but we met a great couple in Santa Suzanna and he took us to a satallite shop and bartered!! He was great we bought a large dish, LNB and stand for 58 Euros. The picture is magic!
We are going back to Spain in September, so thats why I am trying to sort the Sky + out now.
Ginny
We only have the Sky1 package,

a sky card will receive all channels apart from sky sports and sky mvies channels in any sky reciver.
a sky card for a sky plus machine will also receive all channels apart from sky sports and sky mvies channels in any sky reciver.
a sky card for sky plus will only record and playback FREE TO AIR channels only when used in another Sky plus box - (not too sure about 4 or five though as i cannot test as i have just sold my last skyplus box!).
dont forget the further south in europe you go, the weaker the satellite sigansl are...hence why we have 1.8 and 2.4m big dishes here arounf valencia and benidorm to be able to receive bbc and itv! 80cm dishes should be able to get5 ok and approx 50-75% of the sky family pack.
hope this helps.

It does thanks.
1 further question.
Will a Sky+ card & associated box work as if they were at home if you take them both with you. Surely they don't know the box is not at home? or do they?

think of it as a full family holiday, you, the missus, the kids, the dog, the sky box....there is only one of them that will not really want to go into the sea!
apart from the 2 cable and future recording problems i highlighted in earlier post, the box should work as it does at home.
there is no way for sky or the box to know where it is.
however...
if you use skys multiroom / extra sub for a £10 option, you may get a few nasty letters if you take away one of the boxes for a few months - the type of contract for multiroom states that all boxes on the scheme must (in99.9% of cases) be connected to a uk phone line to stop you taking the 2nd discounted card away and using it forever in your holiday home. i think the timescale is 2 months, but all you need to do is get the multirom card and box back home, connect to the line and let it automatically dial sky's computer. otherwise the sky computer will send you a bill for 2 cards at the full package (that you have) price, not 1 package price and £10!

Hi Sat and TV Man,
We have just used the Horizon digital satellite meter to find Astra 2A - 28E Could you tell me if Sky is on this frequency or will we need to tickle it further.

Sky, BBC, ITV, C4, Five, and all the other broadcasters use the satellites at 28.2 - 28.5 which are Astra 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D and Eurobird. They all uses many different transponders / frequencies.
check out lyngsat.com or kingofsat.net for channels, transponders and frequencies.

Thanks to everyone for this great info.
We took our Sky box to France last year and at the end of our tour we lost the channels on the sky box we thought they had turn it off, came home and it worked perfect at home.
What had happened was we forgot to turn off Free to air box first.

1]How far will we get the signal on our receiver, Cannot think of name. The Bubble dome one?
Will we get it into Italy and Spain.
2] We dont get all the channel that Geo listed on our Free to air.
Why?
