Default interior kontiki

Does anyone know what sort of material is used to revamp the surrounds of the cupboards on my kontiki 1991. It has a woodgrain effect , but not real wood. I wondered if it is a paint. The area above the sink/cooker is flaking off, and i would like to give the old girl a mini makeover.

thanks Shirley

its a very thin wood or plastic veneer and will be nearly impossible to remove.

the original veneer is put in place in a press i believe.

you can buy repair putty from good kitchen fitter suppliers that will do the job but very labour intensive.

Hi

so what is flaking off is the top surface of the veneer? I know you can get wood grain effect paint as my sis revmped her kitchen cupboards with it . It looked very good

If the veneer is lifting, try putting a piece of brown or greaseproof paper over it and use a hot iron which should reglue it.

Hi Peter

The veneer is not lifting..its flaking off like powder ( the grain effect on the surface) Hope that makes sense

You could, so long as the surface can be made smooth, get away with a product called "Fablon" wood grain effect,(self adhiesive vynal material) you may have to do all the panels for it to look anywhere near original B&Q etc I have had good results in the past
It can also be bought in trade roll size from Decorator Centres
Geo
PS any chips or damage to panels will show through, so filling and preparation as always dictates the final appearance

Thanks Geo

I remember fablon very well...though i may look into the painted woodgrain effect..I may try out an area where it won't be noticed..
