Hi All,
In the past I have spent three seperate holiday weeks north of the border and have not had one single rain free day.
There were no problems whatsoever with midges though, (perhaps they got drowned).
Perhaps this would not matter so much in a motorhome, but these were in my "Tent" days, and I have had a definate aversion to Scotland ever since.

The midges arrived in Ullapool on the 16 May this year [I was there ] and were
en-masse by the 23 May so said a fellow camper who arrived at Rosemarkie where I was, and had fled from there that day. You must go to Rosemarkie to see the Dolphins as they are so close to shore when its low tide. Having just spent 34 nights in Scotland it is worth a visit but it is better if you can avoid the little beasties.

hi all.. i canot vote as i have never ever ever been to Scotland. i am into fishing and have been told the worst time for midges is after rain when the sun comes out and being by water makes it worst. i know about the skin so soft and the mar mite and deet and don't eat banners i know they don't like wind so all in all why should i spend my time in Scotland much beater chance going south don't you think?

absoloutly best country we visit,. Have been back time and time again. Been skiing in scotlans, kayaking, walking, and surfing. best IMO is the north west , westerross is like gods own country. Built for Motorhomes great people and scenary in line with anywhere else ive been.
However I do think for me the best time to go is in the winter or October. I never go in summer because theres to many tourists .

Just had a really enjoyable tour of the West Coast - didn't find the midges all that bad, definately worth putting up with for the scenery. But if you really can't stand them, head up to where I live on the East Coast - not as picturesque, but there's no midges at all

We spend a lot of time in Turkey where the air is thick with bugs that will bite. Only 3 things have solved it; Firstly douse everything in lemon (mix equal parts water and lemon juice) from a spray bottle. secondly, which works the best, is one of those small ultra-violet lamp things - I think you can get them in places like Robert Dyas in UK, the bugs are attracted to the blue light and then they get fried! The entertainment alone keeps my husband facinated! And lastly, take anti-histamine tablets for 3-4 days BEFORE you get there.
