This morning I feel very frustrated with many of my fellow motor home owners. Being a retired criminal lawyer, that still buys expensive Road Traffic Act manuels to keep up with the law I find myself having to correct peoples ideas of what they can or cannot legally do.
One of the current posts in the American section is about pulling a Toad (car behind a camper).
Firstly American RV's as you know I own one are built to haul cars behind them as it is normal practice in the USA and in fact the towing unit is designed on mine to haul 5000 lbs.
But a lot of European and UK motor homes cannot pull anywhere near that. So how often do we see a UK / European pulling a car that is way over the limits. Often I would say.
So they put a post on saying they have a car now with a an A frame.. they think because it is fitted on a car it is legal. It may or may not be. So many rules and regulations. Yet they buy it and use it and do not bother to check if they are entitled to do so. They never think that the laws are there for a reasons.
A run away motor home with a car pushing it is no joke and often they forget it takes longer to stop and that if connected via a servo the air runs out and then you are trying to stop a dead brick. No joke.
I am frustrated that so many people put our lives at risk or there own. I am frustrated at the fact they do not check the law and rules before they buy an item and will believe a sales pitch from a company that has not fully understood the issues of the law here in the UK or in Europe. Or for that matter what the towing limit is on the vehicle that is going to pull the toad.
As they say you can take the horse to water but you cannot make it drink.
I supose there is always a few people out there that fail to understand... but boy is it frustrating.
