Christmas as big business and consumerism I hate.:xangry:

Christmas as a time to spend with family I love.:xgrin:

As a family we don't "do" stressful at Christmas. We get together, enjoy each other's company, and regard anything that goes wrong as something to be laughed at.

We are considering going away for Christmas next year but I bet that, when the time comes, we will spend it as usual and go away afterwards.

Merry Christmas to one and all!

We always host Christmas Day for the family, traditional meal etc but something different for presents....
We do a family Secret Santa...names in hat,buy a gift costing no more than £10 for your chosen person. Then later in the year we all have a family weekend away together with what we would have spent on individual gifts. We have done this for the last few years and everyone prefers it this way.

The BIG Christmas, Usually means that SWMBO goes all out, and then spends several days (IF she`s Lucky, it can be weeks) paying for it with more pain!. Arthritis is no joke!. This year we are on our own, So I`l get good Steak and cook, with all the trimmings, and a nice glass or two of a decent Red!. Stoke up the Wood burner, find a film or WHY on t-v or prime. and CHILL.

Love it!

The commercial side of Christmas is only as real as you want to allow it to be.
To whine about it being too commercial is a cop out.
If you don't like Christmas because you're a miserable GIT, why not just say so?

Some folk have had tragedies around this time of the year, which obviously affects how they feel about it, but that could be said of any date throughout the year.

Family, good friends, good food, reflection, good will.
Screw the commercial side.....roll on!

I hate it another gross waste of money by people who cannot afford it to give to the retailers who push it so hard.
I find it a lonely time when I feel left out. I used to volunteer to do the Christmas and boxing day shifts in the Hospital just to get some company, but the hospital always just forgot that something to eat over 12 hours would be nice, even the sandwich shop was closed.Mars bar and left over mince pies with a few selections left in the tub that were not the liked ones. BAH!!! humbug.
The only good thing was the days are getting longer again. I hope they will anyway.
I might do off in the van and find a field to eat worms in. Nowhere is open and nothing to do or go.
far better here. Just the one day & then back to work & another day on the 6th January.:xThumb:

Just ignore it as much as possible. Haven't bought presents for I don't know how many years. And it is only in my current job now I give in to the cards (why bother anyway with people you see every day????), that will stop again after the redundancy. As per usual I will be working the day, just found out today, don't mind really to be honest.

I hate the over extended build up, over commercialisation and the pressure exerted to spend, spend, spend...

When it does finally arrive, I love the family and social gathering side to the event, but have no expectation of gifts being bestowed upon me, lavish or otherwise.

Love the getogethers with family and friends ... Hate the commerciality that Christmas has become. So many feel the pressure to buy extravagant stuff which some go into debt for..... don't like that at all.

Not my opinion of you as such, I simply made an observation.
I did indicate some folk have bad memories, etc.
It just be s boring listening to the same "too commercial" whinge as the sole reason for disliking the period.

There is no more commercial exercise than summer holidays, but we don't hear the same whine about that.

"I like it"
"I don't like it"
What more do we need?
I'd just like to hear a new record.
The old one is almost st worn out.

Christmas is what you make of it ...

I have had bad times in the past so my memory of it is of family rows when I was a kid and lots of upset, in latter years it's been a feeling of pressure to 'enjoy' it, which I don't and the 'pressure' to eat the multitude of stuff you've bought and been given knowing full well that you'll put weight on if you do and don't really want it anyway!

The last couple of years we've not bought much at all, no extra chocs, nuts etc, just a bit of food for Christmas dinner itself, usually a nice gammon joint and a large chicken, or a turkey if its not extortionately priced, oh and a nice big tub of double cream for the coffees! We don't have visitors on the day unless we ask my Mum if she wants to come but she doesn't really want to as she likes to be at home watching her multitude of soaps! Last year she went to my brother's for a change but this year he's gone to New Zealand where his daughter lives so she won't be going there ... she always tells me she's happier at home anyway.

We like it nice and quiet, just hubby, me and the dogs - hubby does the dinner and I help prep the veg (if I'm allowed in the kitchen!) and set the table then tidy up the mess left from the dogs opening their presents and thrown the contents and wrapping everywhere ... that's the best part of Christmas for me ... watching them open their presents and the happy yaps when they finally get at the contents!

Once dinner is over and I've cleared up we just slob out, may watch a film if hubby can keep awake otherwise he'll snooze and I'll do a jigsaw puzzle with some old film on the telly ... nice and relaxing ... if we feel peckish later we'll just have something light - a sarnie or a piece of quiche and a lemon tart/mince pie that I'll have made the day before followed of course by a coffee with double cream on top ... mmmmm.

So for us, no pressure, no hassle, nice and quiet and relaxing ... but if it's been snowing and the conditions are 'right' there's the obligatory play with the dogs and a snowball fight!!!!

Now THATS what I call Christmas !!

1. I deplore the fact that the Winter Solstice was hijacked by fundamentalists many years ago.

2. I have never understood (but don't care) why normally sensible people allow themselves to be fleeced and appear happy about it.

3. I refuse to waste money buying "stuff" at inflated prices for people I don't really like, stuff that they don't need and often don't want and for which they rarely express appropriate gratitude anyway.

4. As for myself, the only thing I need is more money to buy a few things that I want but in view of 3 above cannot imagine there being a large box of € notes on the floor under the non-existent tree and "decorations"

Love it, always look forward to decorating the trees while listening to xmas music. Love buying bits and pieces for my daughters and our tradition of baking sausage rolls and mince pies on Christmas Eve.
This year will be first year that daughters in their 20's will not be staying Xmas eve and us all opening pressies together. One is visiting xmas eve but going back home and other coming xmas afternoon and staying night so they won't even see each other.:xsad: Things change, now if they would only make me a granny.:xgrin:

I'm atheist so Christmas, as a religious festival, has no significance for me.
It's sad however that this festival has been completely highjacked by commerce and it's success is measured by how many pounds are spent in the shops versus the previous year and whether you get an iPhone 10 or 11 as a present. The traditional January sales now start before Christmas and the recent commercial invention of Black Friday has already turned into a 3 or 4 day event to get more money into the tills. All the stores are so afraid of losing a sale to a competitor they start filling their shelves with Christmas stock before the summer is over. Christmas packaged mince pies are on sale so early their Best Before date is in November.
It's just become a huge commercial scam which most of the population go along with - at their cost.

Grumpy? Me? Nah - just saying. Roll on January. :)

We are looking forward to Christmas this year, last year we went away for Christmas and although we were on the beach C day it didn't feel like Christmas we didn't have the tree up or buy lots of nice food,so this year we have invited friends round for C lunch, the trees up and bought lots of lovely food and loads of booze, happy days bring it on.
