The yellow on the + centre contact is positive. The blue crimp is because it is 2.5 The red crimp is because the black is smaller 1.5

That's OK I can see how the crimp colour would cause confusion

My bad for not reading properly..

Anyway with the inspiration from this thread I have ditched the two original 12V outlet and the cigarette socket and replaced them with one marine 12V outlet and one the same but with a twin USB outlet. They look so much neater !

I also took a feed down into the glovebox to a single 12V floating socket . I have run to this the the power supply for the Navigation so I have no wires visible. I hate visible wires !

Turns out the coulor coding on my wiring was different with the Live being grey with a yellow trace. I checked with my multimeter just to be sure before comencing.

My van is a late 2013 Peugeot just for reference.

Thanks again Techno100 !!

Andy ...how do you get the old cigarette lighter out? Got the panel off OK but can't figure that bit out. It has what looks like the lamp for illumination that gets in the way.

Cheers

John

Getting there!
I think it's most likely I used a destructive tactic
Just wanted to say a big thanks to Andy for the useful guides, especially the bit about 'destructive tactic'!!!

Given that most of my diy looks like only 'destructive tactics' were used, it is nice to see the job come out right.

I put a multimeter across each USB to check I was going to get the 5v I was expecting, and all is good.

Thanks again Techno!

Kind regards
Andy

Hi Techno.
Where did you get the sockets from?
I've been fancying a similar setup but the only sockets I can find seem to be be very inexpensive and of Chinese origin and I'm concerned that the quality may not be all it should be.

Blue sea do some nice quality ones. I found that the cheap ones stopped radio working due to interference.

Cheers.
I knew you were going to say that.
I'm not a huge fan of cheap Chinese electrical products.

I've found some on amazon which are more expensive but they're from China as well and there's no way to tell if they're better quality or just the same thing with an inflated price tag.

To remove the socket from the trim, look inside the socket and you will see two coloured tabs that are the same plastic as the illuminated section that surrounds. Press these two tabs outward and it will release the metal Center section from the plastic coloured surround, then you can remove the coloured surround.

I removed the wires from the terminal block and just put a bit of heatshrink over them so I’m not having to cut loom and can return if I wish

I paid average £3 per socket. I just ensured they were CE marked. Everything is made in China no matter what, it's just a question of profit margin. Mine have given years of trouble free service

I've pinched a couple of ideas from this thread.
I've swapped the cigarette lighter socket for a twin USB socket and changed the power socket for a twist lock type.

The original plugs had three connection each.

The thinner of the three was for the socket illumination.

I removed the terminals from the plug, cut off the terminal I didn't need and simply taped the loose wiring back to the harness. Then fitted the blue spade terminals to the positive wire.
The negative terminal was simply fitted with a short length of heat shrink.

The backnuts ended up very close to each other which made them rather awkward to tighten.

This is the bracket with the screw hole.
The wiring needs to be tucked underneath before reassembly or the panel won't go back.

The end result.
The USB was available in a variety of illumination colours.
I opted for orange because I figured it would blend in with the original colour of the dash and radio display.

But was it the European CE mark or the China Export mark which means bu##er all although having been cynically designed to look exactly like the European CE mark with just enough difference in spacing between the two letters to avoid legal action?

I wanted some aditional sockets up front in my 97 Amethyst. The plan was to attach through to the leisure battery but try as I might I could'nt find a way of getting a feed through.

In the end I took out the cigarette lighter socket and spliced in a spur from that with a 10A fuse in line across to the passenger side socket blank, and then to a spot in the passenger storage 'bin' on the dash.

I've kept the wiring somewhat lighter than the feed to the lighter socket in the hope that anything drawing more than 10A will blow the inline fuse before affecting the heavier feed.

Hope I did right.
