Only since 2012, but I towed for many years
You should be able to buy dried mealworms from the bird-food section in your local supermarket. They are quite pricey mind, but our wild birds go mad for them.

Beware of feeding it too many bananas, it will be climbing trees instead of flying up them :Eeek:

Update on "Woody".....

Woody seems to be on the mend, and is doing well... :thumb:

Had a few syringes of mushy dog food which he enjoyed...

Just given him a bit more dog food and a small syringe of crushed "Banana", for afters,, which he seems to like..

He sat on my hand watching the TV for a while... then i put him to bed...

Too much TV is not good for a young-un.... He didn`t want to go, and started to play up...

But told him if he didn`t go to bed he wouldn`t get any "Nana" sludge tomorrow..

:RollEyes::winky::ROFLMAO:

PS.... Still not trying to fly... dont think he can...... Could another bird have bought it to our garden,,,,, cos we have seen a couple of baby`s with their Mum or Dad and they are the same size as the parents... as you can see, below, he aint much bigger than a sparrow..

Tried "Googling" it... but not found anything...

How do Woodpeckers perch at night.... We put Woody in an open box lined with tissue paper..

But it dont seem natural just laying there like we do in bed...

Do they sleep on a branch like normal birds... ?

I had a look on google and it seems they sleep in the cavities they peck out of trees. It doesn't say though whether they stand up or lay down.

If he is getting stronger I would say you are doing it right:thumb:

from a site about woodpeckers.

Do not feed the bird when it's cold. It will eat, but will not be able to digest the food. Feeding at this point could do more harm than good.

6 When warmed up, you can offer the bird warmed Pedialyte, Gatorade or a mixture to give the bird needed fluids. Do not give cold drinks. You can make a mixture of 1 tablespoon salt, 3 tablespoons sugar in one quart of warm water. Feed every 15-30 minutes with a syringe, pipette or eye-dropper. Some birds can drink from a spoon or a water bowl, but they usually splash around more fluid than they drink.

Don't try to pick up the bird from the tail. The woodpecker will just drop the tail feathers and get away.

Still with us....... getting a bit vocal in the morning till it`s fed..::bigsmile:

One foot forward.... we dont have to ram the syringe down it`s throat to get food inside him.... we just put it in front and squeeze and it eats the food as it comes out.. :thumb:

Still no signs of flying.... but wont be long.... I think...

Another step closer....

Spoilt Bratt....

Put the TV off ready for bed..... and some one wasn`t very happy.... Photo`s below...

Now put him on a log, rather than him just lay in a lined box.. to get him used to what he should be perched on ready for the big release day...

And in the course of a day he is taking his food off a pair of tweezers instead of a syringe... :thumb:

Mo just read this whole thread, you got me grinning from ear to ear, am lovin it and what you are doing for Woody, I sort of hope he doesn't fly off, and just stays local and comes sits with you on sunny lazy days, will obviously have to build a travelling tree for him, and put an extension on it in a year or two for his extended family...

Lovin it, lovin you you gonna get a fan club here :thumb:

You`s a silly sod Larry... :ROFLMAO:

Unfortunately Woody is not himself today....

Had to wake him up for his first feed, and then didn`t eat much...

Put him down and straight off to sleep again,,,,, just been in to give him some more and had to wake him again... and off to sleep while I was feeding him...

Thought it strange there was no chirping first thing this morning...
