My husband downloaded Windows 10 recently on our PC, although it flagged up a box saying the Library File wasn't downloaded it seemed to be working OK.

Now I can't turn the computer off! Press Shut Down, says its shutting down, screen goes black, then you're back to the desktop screen.
Apparently it doesn't do your computer any good to turn it off via the On switch.

Any ideas please in very simplifed terms please? Having to leave the computer on all the time.

On ours, right click the window icon bottom left. You then get the options to restart shut down etc

In the circumstances you describe it shouldn't do any real harm. I had a problem updating the 32 but Win 7 netbook we have because Asus had decided not to support one of their built in functions under Win 10.

Switching off and the on again using the power button allowed me to start up in Safe Mode. I had to resort to system recovery in order to be able to get rid of the offending Asus software but you may not have to.

It does but as I said you get the shut down option too.

With our Windows 10 version, right clicking seemed to be the only way to find the shut down option but this isn't working. Thank you for trying to help. :)

kill the power and cause a hard reboot. if using a laptop, hold down power key for 10 seconds. shouldn't do too much damage if the hard drive is not busy

It's a PC - do you mean 'pull the plug out' ?

Thanks @TheBig1 I'll try that. HWMBO is away, don't want him coming back to find I've mucked it all up. ::bigsmile:
