I have Win 8.1 on the laptop but can't see anywhere that says I have allowed sharing or anywhere to close that option.
That's because it (WiFi Sense) isn't a feature of Win 8.1 but will be a feature of Win 10 and will be turned on by default (the point this thread is warning about).

In my area the broadband internet is poor so I would not be happy for others to be using my internet. It is slow enough already. I have Win 8.1 on the laptop but can't see anywhere that says I have allowed sharing or anywhere to close that option. Since recent MS update I also have the window 10 icon.

Delete the relevant 'updates' and that is the end of the problem for now. I do not understand why anyone wants Windows 10 apart from those using Windows 8 and their best option is to 'upgrade' to Windows 7 :D

Mention Microsoft and away we go, this, that and the other. Why not just try it and see, you can go back to whatever OS you had before if you don't like/want it, it really isn't that hard.

I have been one of the testers/bug reporters for some months and I have to say Windows 10 is looking very good indeed, coming together very nicely. But of course it depends on you, some will like it very much, others will not and Apple users are unlikely to ever like it. Horses, courses!

It is not the 'look' which is the problem but what is going on behind the scenes which many users are not aware of and, when they find out, object to. No use saying that Apple and Google already do such things. Although we all deserve an 'honest' operating system there is no chance getting one with the main players.

Very true! But, if you want to use a computer, then you have to use an OS and we all have our own idea which one is " more honest" than the other. Bottom line is, I would be surprised if any of them are. So keeping that in mind, you take yur pick.

I think that many users get carried away with security, if you have good security on your computer and DONT open un requested links you should be fine. User mistakes are far more likely to breach your security than the OS and that goes for, XP, Win 7/8/ 10, Mac and Android.

Are they actually doing testing this time then? I thought they just released it for people to play with rather than running proper tests with known inputs and predicted outputs :D
I would hope they do both.

Formal testing to prove it does what it is supposed to do in pre-determined situations.
Then let real users get their hands on it to find out what happens when the users do the unexpected & the unimagined.

Too much information :Eeek::laughing:

Coming from an IT background I hate it when software developers use the word "testing" to describe what is, at best, parallel running ::bigsmile:

Not sure about " parallel running" I used it as my " main" Computer without any other OS, but you are right, I didn't test it, I used it and still do. :)

What unexpected & unimagined? They are supposed to be testing the code of the software, not how it is used. If software (like any other engineering) is tested properly it doesn't matter how it is used because it will have been proved to perform to its specification.

The problem is that such testing costs money and so developers take shortcuts instead of doing the job properly., only fixing the residue when they receive complaints. That doesn't mean, though, that the residue contains anything unexpected or unimagined.

I, and others no doubt, will be pleased to read of your results and opinions on the upgrade Graham. (y)

@Gromett, Karl, will you be updating any Win7 or Win8 machines in the next few weeks at all?

Cheers for now,

Jock. :)
Yes but not to Windows. Will be upgrading to Linux on this windows 8.1 laptop. Finally blew my fuse with it last night.

Which distro are you thinking on, Karl?
I use Linux Mint XFCE currently. I may give Cinamon and Mate a try while I am at it but I will more than likely go back to XFCE as it is lightweight and doesn't get in my way.

Funnily enough XFCE Mint is the one I haven't used!
Would guess Cinnamon is the "easiest" for anyone moving over from Windows.

It may be the laptop doesn't meet the minimum hardware requirements needed for W10, which I think have been listed earlier in this Thread somewhere. Most likely culprit might be the graphics chip or even the CPU itself.

Given the experience people had when W7 came out, running that on the minimum spec was pretty dire. From memory they said it only wanted 1Gb of RAM, which was way too small. The same might happen with W10 in that the minimum spec is a bit short of the ideal or even just tolerable.

I suspect that if I knew the answer to that one, I'd be a lot richer than I am now! :D

A lot of the complaints (including this thread) about any consumer software are precisely because it does perform according to specification. The specification was drawn up by Microsoft in this case, not by the customer & many customers will find it difficult to tell whether the fact they can't do what they want to do is a bug or a feature. The main point of this second phase of testing by users is to get their reaction to the new spec - as well as to pick up genuine bugs that their own testing has failed to find.

True - testing is expensive & every producer has to balance three things - the price they will charge for the software & it's effect on sales, the cost of extensive testing against the flack (& resultant cost) of not doing it right & finally their own return on capital.

As everyone has different priorities, there never will be universal agreement on the right balance.

If it runs Win 8.1 it should run Win 10 but see below.
I've got three machines that haven't got the icon yet but as I'm running 7 not necessarily bothered!
This from Microsoft site -
If you don’t see the Get Windows 10 app on your PC, it might be because:

  1. Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
  2. Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
  3. You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
  4. Your device is not running genuine Windows.
Running Windows Update and installing any available updates will fix the first three issues. Need more help? Go to our Windows Community Forum.

PCs that we determine cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29, 2015. After July 29, 2015, we’ll enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PC’s compatibility if you choose.

If your device is managed as part of a school or business network, please check with your IT administrator about upgrading to Windows 10.

Fair enough - so long as they are not dishonest enough to call it testing

A cautionary tale for operating system developers.

There once were three market traders selling fruit.
One sold apples. They were really top quality eating apples, but rather expensive. They weren't any good for cooking either, but the guy did all right & had a loyal following - although some said his customers had more money than sense.

Another trader sold pomegranates. All different varieties, at giveaway prices. Most people couldn't tell them apart & weren't that interested anyway because they needed to learn a whole new set of skills to be able to do anything much with them. But those who took the trouble made some amazing dishes, so he was well supported by the professional chefs.

The third trader sold bananas. After a shaky start, he was selling the best bananas around. But time moves on & after all, you can only do so much with a banana. So he started selling oranges instead. A versatile fruit - you can do a lot with an orange, but it was never the easiest fruit to deal with. Certainly not as easy as an apple - you need to do battle with the skin to get the best out of an orange. On top of that, he could never really get top quality oranges - both the other two had better quality fruit, even if their market was specialised.

So he tried another change. He thought he'd try lemons. After all, they are a bit like oranges underneath, just a different colour & they taste a bit different. On top of that, after being let down at first, he could get really good lemons. He found they needed to have a point on the end to be really good. But his customers were still up in arms! They really didn't like lemons, now they were used to oranges. And after all, no matter how good the quality, if it's a lemon - well, it's always going to be a lemon.

So rumour has it that he's going back to oranges. This time, people say he's found a really good supplier & he's also found some oranges with some of the advantages of lemons, although nobody's very sure just how that's going to work yet. But he's going to give all those who bought oranges or lemons a free try of this new wonder fruit.

And while all this has been going on, there's always this woman at the back who keeps grumbling that she liked it much better when he sold bananas & anyway, her old shopping bag was made to fit bananas & there's no way she's buying a new one just because these fancy new oranges won't fit.

I'll leave you to match fruit to OS.

I find XFCE to be closer to XP than the newer ones last time I Played. I installed the xfce on a few windows users computers and after a couple of questions never heard from them again....
