Will a 50cc Vespa carry two? (1 Viewer)

I've got a scooter rack already fitted to my Knaus. I'm thinking of getting a 50cc as I can ride without a full test and carry a pillion.
My question is will a 50cc manage that? Together we'd be about 18 stone. We only want to pootle about or should I bite the bullet and sign myself up for a full bike test so we can at least use a 125cc.
I've considered a piaggio MP3 LT but I'd have to have a trailer which I'm not keen on but could be convinced otherwise.
So functors what advice can you give me?

Are you sure you can carry a pillion? I'm reasonably sure I couldn't last time I had 50cc scooter. It was specifically excluded on my insurance.

Having said that mine was 2 seats...

Full car licence entitles you to full moped licence...inc carrying pillions.

Yes.......but only two very small people. And I’m not sure about your licence? moped or scooter? moped has peddles

As I understand it if you have a full licence ( car ) you can ride a 50 cc moped and if it has foot pegs can carry a passenger.
Without foot pegs illegal ,the bike must be designed to carry a pillion you can't have legs flapping.

If you’re already licensed to ride a moped your driving licence will show as category P.

Seems ok.. maybe my insurance had that in it to keep the premium down.. mine had pegs..

So Who Can Ride A Scooter?
According to the ‘Highway Code’, Scooters (Mopeds) are up to 50cc with a maximum speed of 30mph (50kph). If a moped is modified to go faster than 30mph then it is no longer a moped and a different licence is required to ride it - a licence which cannot be obtained until the rider is 17. It is illegal for a 16 year old to ride a moped that has been modified to make it go faster. Insurance also becomes invalid.

To ride a Scooter, learners MUST:

• Be 16 or over
• Hold a provisional licence
• Complete Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)*
• The CBT certificate (DL196) is only valid for a period of 2 years. If the rider does not pass a full motorcycle test within that period the CBT will need to be retaken.

Learner riders must observe the following rules:

• The rider must display full size L-plates front and rear
• The rider is not permitted to carry pillion passengers
• The rider is not permitted to ride on the motorway.
• At 17 or older riders can ride a Moped, Scooter or Motorcycle up to 125cc with provisional entitlement. Alternatively de-restricting a Moped-Insurance & DVLA will need to be notified.

I have a full car licence, what can I ride? *
With a full car licence having passed pre-2001 you are eligible to ride a moped (50cc Scooter) without the need for any test or training (C.B.T). You are also allowed to carry a passenger and do not need to display ‘L’ plates. Having past your driving test post-2001, a C.B.T will need to be carried out.

I know a couple who have the piaggio 125 3 wheeler , they aren't the lightest couple and they love the bike . filtering on a 3 wheeler isn't easy !. Whatever you choose will work , just depends what your expectations are . good luck .

Even with a full license I would still do the CBT if I wasn't used to riding a motorised bike.

It's so long since I was on a motorbike I'd want to do a course before I went on the road again - not that it is a likely scenario.

You might be ok down hill with the wind behind you. But 18 stone you might struggle up hill. Ralph and I hired one when we were courting. We burnt it out. It was in Crete , red hot. We struggled on the hills. It was quicker walking

I did the CBT last year. Morning instruction and some on the road on a 50cc scooter. Then had a similar lesson on a 125cc geared motorbike. For someone like me who has never riden a motorbike then the CBT is a good idea. The 125cc motorbike then gives you an idea of 'speed' on two wheels. Quite scary!

I think 2 up on a 50cc will be pedestrian, painful if any hills are involved. I think you'd be better off with 125cc as a minimum for 2 up, but you'd need the appropriate licence of course.

Just done cbt you can carry passengers on 50cc but mine had ajob to carry me let alone 2 any way will be changing to 125cc soon

Go for the MP3, you will be glad of the extra power and will use it a lot more and go further.

Bought my 500 two years ago, never ridden anything other than a cycle before, meant to do the CBT but never got round to it.

Towed it round France and into Spain last year for 8 weeks, means you can stay a little further out without having to think about it. Had no problems with trailer on sites or aires.

I am 19 stones and didn't want the hassle or cost of a full licence, so it was my only real choice, but loving it.

50cc no way your going to be better walking. We have a 125cc Lifan, going up hills is a gamble. We are looking for some thing with a bit more beef but still wanting to carry it inside the garage, any ideas great fully accepted?

Look at one of these lighter than most scooters yet a proper bike and cheap too buy.

We carry a Kawasaki 650 Versys in our garage with a little mod to the screen but we do have over 1200kgs payload.

Some of the three wheelers up to 400cc can be ridden on a car licence as they have a footbrake . they are heavy though so will need a trailer .

If you are nipping a short way into town for a baguette or to go to a restaurant then 50cc will suffice . if you want to sight see uphill and down dale it won't be a pleasant experience .

In my opinion avoid cheap Chinese stuff .
