I have been using the following unlocked MiFi unit which I have found excellent. One limitation is that it does not have a connection for external antenna so in areas of weak signal I position it up in the rooflight. There is probably a later model. The better deals for SIM's on the Three network seem to now be for 4G so maybe better to buy a 3G/4G MiFi unit?

Hi
thanks for your replies - I had forgotten to mention that I also would like to use abroad in France so I guess the mifi could become very expensive? I also would like to use it to connect for internet streaming too.
Thanks for your help

Hi irnbru, yes but I only use my mifi when away from home 3 or 4 times a year (for about 3 weeks each time) so 1gb does me each time even in France (I don't do streaming) as only use for checking email /banks/credit cards & of course moho FUN.

Streaming could be an issue as the speed won't be the same as you'd get at home with a standard 'land' based system.

I don't have a problem streaming in EU or UK when connected to a wifi signal ( ie: BT-FON ), however when using my MiFi ( when no free wifi ) sometimes it freezes, but not very often. Streaming via MiFi can be costly.........

I use a hauwei mifi with an external antenna when necessary. Data from 3 at £15 for 3Gb paygo. Have not failed to get a signal in 2 months in France and Spain and only needed the external antenna once. Cost of data is the same as the uk in the feel at home countries

A Mifi provides a mobile internet connection, either 3G or 4G, the same as you have on your phone. It does not connect you to a Wifi network i.e. BT Wifi, FON or McDonalds. You need something like an iBoost to do that.

You need to be aware of the difference and know which one you want as they aren't the same thing at all.

Personally I have both in the van. An iBoost setup fromwww.motorhomewifi.com and a MiFi device with a SIM card in it that is only ever used in Europe.

Finding this info very helpful as we will be in the UK and Ireland for 3 months from April. I have a Virgin mobile wifi at home in Oz and was thinking about taking this device and getting a new sim in it. Would this work???

Depends on how important the streaming is to you might be best to go for the mifi and stream only when on wifi on a site etc. If its really important could look at satellite internet but costs a bomb.

The MiFi needs to be unlocked to take a sim from another company than the original. It may already be unlocked but you need to check before you leave to avoid angst. Either take it to a phone shop or slip another sim in and see if it still works. If it doesn't a bit of Googling on the MiFi model number should throw up how to unlock it.

Thanks DBK and I will basically only be checking emails, fb, googling info, booking tickets etc...not sure what streaming is...unless it is downloading movies or tv shows which we will probably not bother with.

With three on 20gb for 15 quid..
Contract .. but it's not a bad deal.
As the vans on the drive it's another wifi source at home too.

Yes better 12 month etc contract deals BUT this isn't more than a 1 month contract and for that you get 20gb of data AND a great MIFI for nowt!

That's the point I was trying to make ... if you need a MIFI and don't even use the data it's ONLY £20!

That Mifi 3 sounds perfect. We only want it for 3 months and to be able to access emails, fab and the net.
