many many years! since I was a kid
wifi and mobile broadband are two totally different technologies. wifi is the same as used at home, just you connect to somebody elses router. mobile broadband uses a sim card like in mobile phones to connect to mobile phone network using a dongle (modem) or mifi (mobile router)

yes . i use a dongle here in uk .,but when away i use the alfa . not guaranteed to get anything but 9 out of 10 places you can. works for me . so long as you can use the computer what more do you want .
the other way is get a dongle over there or have yours opened to accept other sim cards .
i thought about it but having tried the alfa . stuck with it .

yes , in many places specially in spain you can use the village wifi for a couple of hours for free .if you need more go to the offices and pay a small fee. many bars etc let you .plus hotels etc . i have been quite along way from anybody and picked up free wifi. mind these days you can get antenna,s that pick it up from several km,s . abroad recreation centers very often have a free one as well.
