Why won't YouTube play? (1 Viewer)

We are travelling in france and find that we can't play you tube clips. Is this a problem of our settings somehow or of being in france? Anyone else have this ?

Do you get a message saying it " can't be played in your country"? I have a feeling it's to do with licensing.
Or possibly not sufficient bandwidth?

It tells you if it's a country thing.

Are you on an app or the main website?

There is a setting in the iPhone/iPad app where you can choose for HD videos to only play on WiFi. You could try that.

The lack of bandwidth could be a good shout as well. If your signal is poor then it may be struggling to download enough of the video to buffer so it won't start to play.

What sim card are you using?

If 3 (feel at home), their service is throttled while abroad (not that they would admit it). We had 7 weeks in France and Spain last year using 3 and was never able to watch YT or even a video on BBC website.

It's FREE but in my opinion a bit of a con, only good for basic browsing and email.

3 sim card throttles when abroad which made it impossible to listen to the radio app when using it in France last year. The workaround is to use a VPN which worked perfectly for me and I was able to stream everything with reasonable speeds as long as I had a decent 3g connection. I have only used 3 sim in France so don't know about anywhere else.

Maybe it's blocked by 'three at home' ,

read the fair usage policy when roaming..

Edit , found this...

... Premium rate numbers - numbers starting 070, 09 and 118 - are blocked. 08 numbers are included .... Youtube or any other streaming does not work.

The strange thing is - we use spotify a lot too and that comes and goes but sometimes has long periods of streaming.
I'm using an iPhone

If it is an early ipad, Apple stopped supporting YouTube via the app but you can still get to particular clips via Safari, but it is a faff.
