Why don't you see more women driving?

No - I am not looking for a lot of Jim Davison style women make crappy driver comments......

As a woman I have noticed when waving at passing MH's that there are hardly ever women driving, I just wondered why.

As a couple we split the driving 50/50 almost all the time but it seems not everyone does. Of course if only one of you drive or you are single then choices are limited but for those couples out there do you share the driving or does one of you get twitchy if not in control?

I very seldom drive our van. I don't particularly like driving and Jill is happy to do it so I do the navigating (which I am better at :D).

A bit of both - I am a bad passenger AND Denise thinks the MH is too big. So I do all the driving :)

You have been spectacularly unsuccessful at finding Bruges. It really is not that hard.

There are fewer women with driving licences and probably many fewer who have a licence with grandfather rights,,, ie for over 3.5t

A decade ago there was a 20-point difference, with 81% of men owning a full car driving licence compared with 61% of women.
But i n 2013/14 the disparity had almost halved to 13 points - 80% of men and 67% of women.

My wife doesn't have her licence , so I have no choice, and even if she passed her test she couldn't drive it.. ours is over 3.5t

I get that in general but that is approx 4 men to 3 women - I certainly haven't seen 3 women driving MH's for every 4 men I have seen. Maybe 1 in 20.

Maybe it is just that I drive a lot for my job (about 40K a year) so the step up in vehicle is no big deal. Because of the miles I do I always prefer to be a passenger but wouldn't expect him indoors to do all the driving though.

Mrs Badknee is a great driver but the size of our MoHo frightens her. She did try for the first time on our Jocklandshire trip a few weeks ago. She was quite good with the width and knowing where the f/n/s wheel was in relation to the edge of the road but went into a right hand corner a little too fast, panicked, and that was that.
We did 1768mls but shared the driving. I did 1767mls and she did all the rest

another factor is that most motorhome owners are over 50 .. many over 60 and even 70+ ..

IIRC the last poll showed that the biggest age group was 55 (i'll have a look for the poll)

I'm only guessing, but the ratio of women drivers to men is probably more in the younger age groups..

few of the wife's would have passed a driving test when they were young.. .. and may feel it's too late now..

    edit..
found one such poll.. I'm sure there are more..

    1. 25 - 35?

      1.0%
    2. 36 - 45?

      12.2%
    3. 46 - 55?
      58 vote(s)
      28.3%
    4. *
      56 - 65?
      76 vote(s)
      37.1%
    5. 65 + ?

I seen many more behind the wheel than I thought I would...

Unless they were LHD and I didn't notice that..

Haha, reminded me of walking into a music venue at the MoHo show at Peterborough earlier this year, we were late and all the seats were taken so we stood at the back, it was a sea of grey heads in front of us and Mrs Badknee remarked 'now that really is 50 shades of grey' !

I like driving the MH so much my wife doesn't get a chance, though she has driven it just to get a feel for the thing.

I have to say, I have observed the exact opposite! I don't know why, but on our last excursion in the van, I noticed that the vast majority of passing motorhomes were either singled crewed with the lady at the helm, or indeed double crewed, also with lady at the helm!

We share the driving with me doing most of the driving on the other side of the channel as Max hasn't driven abroad before. However next year he intends to have a try.

It's not the length that's the problem, it's the width!!!!!
