Its fun that's why!:)

Seriously though....I change reasonably frequently because as I buy good value import vans the cost to change less.. Leave it for years and its a much bigger lump of money you need to find. That is my reasoning anyway....

Well we changed ours as the kids changed and tried to upgrade to something a little more quality each time. ..
We've had a budget CI which was just awesome. We've had a family Adria which was class.. we then had a bessacar 765 which was fantastic and we now finally got to achieve what we wanted. A nice euro top class merc 3l auto fully winterised Rapido..
To be honest it's not a patch on the other 3 vans.... when compared to money v quality.
The CI wins hands down on that.

All vans are overpriced poorly built pieces of showroom glory (yes Hymer owners even yours) not designed for the purpose in which they are used.

@Jac Sprat as long as the layout fits you will be fine. Keep a good tool box handy though. ..there's always a screw that needs fixing or something falling off

We have only had one van ............... a Globecar Globescout....

31000 miles and 2 1/2 years later we can see that we got it RIGHT FIRST TIME :D
Smug g*t!

It might be right for you now but needs/wants change ... that's what tends to happen with most owners as it did with us; we started with a Commer Autosleep camper which was great for the purpose at the time of going to microcar rallies with our Bond minicar and also vintage car shows as both were able to be put on display, but when we did more holidaying rather than attending rallies for a couple of days we needed more space to 'live' in hence our getting something else, and over the years as we've holidayed for longer and have more kit (bikes, canoe) we needed more storage space and fixed beds.

What's a GRP ROOF for us novices please?
GRP is better at resisting heavy hail and tree branch damage than ally. And for reasons which I still cant understand many European campsites seem to insist that you camp under tree cover...clearly they were not in the scouts!!

Had our first joint, ie together not make, van for 5+ years met bigtree a couple of times and last time had a good look at his set up, john discovered that you can get a proper KTM Duke in a garage, so that was it.
We changed to a 4 berth from a six, two double beds and only one lounging area. It really suits John , but i am still not as happy with it as our first. no me and you space, not a lot of food preparation space, NO CUTLERY DRAWER, though think i have got yet another solution to that one.
Is great for socialising but we have had to get another awning as the old one didn't fit and we now need an inner tent to enable us to take the grandchildren as before.
Despite my misgivings it is a lovely van to drive and the diesel heating is brilliant, if only i could close the vent in the over garage bed.
Love getting out and about on the bike but miss cycling, am doing more walking though.
Previous van for me , before I met john, was a romahome, had it for 7 years, was great for one, so long as i didn't want a shower.

since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
Were on our first motorhome. Bought it 14 months ago and we absolutely love it.

Fixed bed, good sized shower & toilet, seat belts for 2 additonal travellers, full size cooker, big fridge freezer, great payload, etc etc.

A british built van (no not a swear word...), eveything works, is reliable, comfortable and not too big at 7.1m.

Are we happy with it... well has the Pope got a balcony.... we are chuffed.

I love Hymers and Burstners, because of the insulation, double floor etc but interestingly enough, we would spend a lot more money and compromise on some of things that are important to us.

Each to their own. :):)

Care to share make/model?

If it's a completely open vent just with fins you can easily replace it with one with a butterfly closer instead.

The sign of an artist at work, he pours everything into the job and is just too exhausted afterwards.
I hear Ramsay is the same.

Real reason was layout.

Unlike others I couldn't wait to get rid of the fixed bed.

It took me longer to wash-up than it did for him to prepare for and cook the meal, and us eat it too, ... mess everywhere ... don't get me wrong I don't mind doing my share but when I end up having to do a 'deep clean' of the front of the van to find all the food he's scattered around, the fat thats gone everywhere (fortunately I've educated him in the use of lids ... on threat of death!), and scrape and scrub pans etc it ain't funny ... best one was when he tried to make some popcorn and burnt the bottom of his favourite pan ... I still haven't managed to get the black off the inside of it.

We bought our first van 10 years ago a tag axle Burstner as we were going to full time in it. After 7 1/2 years we had to give up and go back into a house as ill health forced both of us to do so. We then bought a Swift 622 which we have had 2 years now. Both vans were the right ones to choose to suit our way of life.

Do a good study of what you want before parting with any dosh.

I don't agree that you can't get it right first time. We took ages looking before we bought our first van. The only thing we knew for sure was that we wanted a continental van. In the end, we bought a 2-year-old Burstner Nexxo, with French bed. It was a good buy and suited us down to the ground.
We kept it for 4 years and sold it earlier this year, because we wanted something newer.
We bought a new Hymer from Germany. Same layout as the Burstner, but everything that bit nicer and newer.
We love it, but we were also happy with the Burstner.
Take your time, look around and although every van is a compromise in some respects, don't buy anything that doesn't 'feel right.' Mistakes are expensive.

I changed mine because I looked after my mum with alzheimers virtually 24/7 and was limited in when I could go away for a weekend. I bought a fixed bed one so she could come with me.... I sold my soul to get it but mum never made it away with me as the alzheimers went worse almost over night. I loved my last little motorhome ... :(

This thread typifies what I love about motorhoming - there's a van for everyone!

We changed from tugging about 4yrs ago and after many months of research bought a MH with the same layout as the last caravan, a Bessacarr 582. It was a good looking van and had an excellent spec but the quality was poor. We used it for about 7mths each year - Spain/Portugal in the winter and following the Tour de France in the summer. Whilst it had a 1000kg payload, access to storage was either in through the habitation door or via a couple of very small hatches. This was OK when your on a campsite for a fortnight but when moving about every few days, it soon become a pain in the a**se. And besides, everyman should have a garage!
But what put the final nail in the coffin was that whilst away in Spain the kitchen worktop began to de-laminate[the van was about 20mths old].

So, more research and off to the Peterboro show where we bought the current van - a Hymer 680 Starline. What a garage. I go work in it when I want some peace!

Had it about 18mth. It's not perfect, as we all know, there's usually a compromise or two somewhere but it'll do for now.

Terry
