our current kettle ( for use on the gas hob) pours more water over the worktop than into the mug, so we need to upgrade. Thinking a folding handle may be beneficial. So what brand of kettle do you recommend?

We have one of these, we like it -

While there's nothing wrong with the one we have, we quite fancy one of the collapsing ones - http://www.outdoorworlddirect.co.uk/kampa-folding-kettle-12l.html

Thanks for that. I don't fancy a collapsing one. I think it will make the water taste. I have a silicon lid on my travel mug, and it definitely changes the flavour of my tea. .... The cup part is China. Fancy the van go kettle. It looks ideal.

We had one with a fold down handle but when in use the handle touched the metal of the kettle body and made the handle hot too! so we stick to a fixed handle.
The fold down handle was also a little unstable when pouring, depending on the amount of water in it.

We have a 5 year old Trangia kettle which is not the best looking but not having a seam is robust, also with the folding handle fits in the sink. Our son has our small one and it is still going strong 17 years on. I got through 3 kettles in 2 years before this one, we drink a lot off coffee.:)

We don't have either of those problems with ours. The handle stays up when you open it, so doesn't touch the body while it's in use. To be honest, the hinges holding the handle on don't look the strongest, but ours has been in use for three years, going in and out of drawers, and hasn't broken yet. I've realised that ours is actually the 1.6 litre version, rather than the 2 litre one - currently £11.50 on Amazon.

Perfect ------- folding lid - small capacity - and a big base. Just like our 5 year old one

We use this type from Argos because you do not get your hands near the steam. They come in many colours, do not dribble and heat up quickly.

We have a le creuset one for the gas hob. Very solid and handle folds down. Not cheap but we've had ours 15+ years and in great condition despite being used when we had the tent, caravan and now the RV.

Go Outdoors do a cheapie one, but DON'T be tempted!!!
It's got a 'trigger' that opens the spout BUT as you pour, the steam rises to the handle and can scald your hand!!
Not sure if it's the position of the spout or the need to tip it more than usual, but never had a kettle like it! Used it once, now in the garage.

We have a Tittle, or a Ketpot, that boils water (on gas hob) and into which one drops teabags (or tea). Two appliances in one. On EHU we just use it as a normal teapot after using the electric kettle. :)

that cheap is not usually good and good is not usually cheap

Not strictly true. To quote Dolly Parton, 'It cost me a lot of money to look this cheap!'

We've got a kettle with a folding handle which we've had for several years bought from Camping International several years ago and still going strong. No plans to get another!

Also have a low wattage electric kettle, think it came from Argos years ago¬
