Which Base Vehicle? (1 Viewer)

Bearing in mind costs, which is likely to mean that Fiat is cheaper than a Ford while the Ford is cheaper than the Merc etc. What base vehicle will be on the vehicle you are driving when you next change and why. Assuming of course that your vehicle is European.

Would have chosen either Ford option but could only pick one, after Fiat's treatment of owners and still refusing to admit that any 3ltr vans have a fault would not go near them.

I have just voted for an Iveco Daily, because that what we have now and are really pleased with it, because of the rear wheel drive aspect.

However our next vehicle is a self build which will be on a Mercedes 4 x 4 ex army truck (1017a). Because of round the world travel and parts availability and simplicity of repairing.

If not I would have also voted for the Ford Rear wheel drive option too.

It would depend on the habitation layout for me , every time. The engine would definitely be an afterthought:blonde2:
We had a Fiat since Nov last year , and had no troubles with it what so ever. It drives well and has no problems with hills.
Since weve had the cam belt tensioner job done ( our choice BTW) and the front brake disc sorted ( It was squeaking ) I'm sure its running even better.
We think Its economical on fuel too.

I voted rear wheel drive Tranny,, and if they did a Eurovan with a slide out I`d have one tomorrow. :thumb:

Cant do the poll as most of you know I have niether interest or inclanation to purchase a modern vehicle from any manufacturer. I dont trust modern mechanicals...to much to go wrong...and if it cannot be repaired without electronic gismos its no good to me.
If I was to replace any of my campers it would have to be rear wheel drive and either a Cummins puller or a Mercedes 3ltr non turbo, so that does not leave me much choice.
The one camper which I would love is the old 750S Hymer,you dont see many becouse they didnt make many,was once told 12 but have never been able to confirm this.
3ltr Merc non turbo with a trailing tag axel,once had a ride in one and I cant imagine a smoother ride in anything.
If anyone hears of one for sale please let me know.

I personally would go with Bev,,choose the layout first over everything else..most modern vans are reliable in any format

I know you have banged on this despite not owning one,,but they are popular and I would not hesitate to have one ..the initial problem seems to of died down and many have been satisfied with the aftercare.

Before we get onto the Fiat debate...has nobody heard of the modern transit with the dual mass flywheel, it breaks up and slowly falls apart destroying expensive starter motors on a regular basis.
But Ford wont admit there is a problem...Oops.

I would like to see the 3.2ltr 5cyl Transit with the 200ps engine in a MH.

The 200ps Transit has 347 lb/ft of torque! More than a stage 3 Cossie!

My thoughts exactly , if it can't be fixed by a blacksmith it's too modern and I certainly wouldn't venture beyond the EU unescorted ..

I very much agree, the peugeot 2.5td engine is a rear work horse, I have owned five of them, three in mini buses (2xTalbot, 1xBoxer) and two in motorhomes (1xTalbot, 1xBoxer) and no trouble whatsoever.:thumb:
But Peugeot is not on the survey option ? unless it is classed with Fiat?

OOOH don.t you just love tranny's ( never liked them ) I have not voted as my next van will be made from what ever I feel is a bargain price for the base :thumb: or what will lend itself to my design :thumb:Must admit to having a soft spot to the Iveco :thumb: but as standard it is on the narrow side The new pug,cit, fiat are a poss as they are wider than any other vans :thumb:Merc and VW are again like the Iveco ( narrow ) but are plagued with electrical probs At the moment all the mechanics I speak to tell me there is not a good base van made without problems that seem to be built in
I have been looking at a van that I am tempted with and that is based on a Renault master ( same engine as Iveco ) but that is French and every vehicle I have ever owned made from there has given me grief so I tend to shy away

I would think it is included under the Fiat banner along side the Citroen - all 3 are basically the same van :thumb:

merc sprinter

Have listened to lots of peoples opinions on this one and for us the Merc Sprinter 2.7L 5 cyl with a Sprintshift gearbox, with cruise control of course.
Hey that`s exactly what we have and can`t fault it.
The rear wheel drive does seem to be better than it` front wheel couterparts, the turning circle on our Merc is amazing, we can get into and out of spots that family saloons struggle with.
Would definitely buy another. :thumb:
