11:15am: broadband connection goes dead
11:30am: back up...or not
11:32am: redirect to a BT page saying that there could be a serious problem
11:35am: log into PlusNet site with dongle and find:

"At approximately 11:10am a significant number of our broadband customers lost connection to the internet. We suspect this was caused by an outage on our supplier's network.

We apologise for the inconvenience and will update this thread as soon as we have any more information on this issue."

Since PlusNet are owned by BT, is this ISP-speak for "someone's put their JCB through one of our nice shiny fibre-optic cables...and we're trying to work out which one"?

Ah, good old BT. The company that routed all its Manchester cabling through a single tunnel - and then compounded that by routing the cabling for its mobile network through the same tunnel - so that when there was a fire the whole lot was taken out.

When we implemented out first on-line transaction processing system in 1975, BT advised that we pay for a backup dial-up line in case the dedicated line from Middlesbrough to Thornaby went down. It was only when some JCB driver put his shovel in the wrong place that we discovered that the dedicated and backup lines were only routed separately for a few yards at either end.

Well, it sorted itself out a couple of hours later:

"We've received notification from our suppliers that the underlying issue has now been fixed.

Unfortunately our network is badly out of balance, so in order to avoid performance problems over the weekend we will be briefly disconnecting a number of customers over the course of the afternoon."

I guess they found the dodgy fuse then

Apparently it's affected other ISPs as well.
