Hi,

Nearly Christmas, so we are getting ready to book Eurotunnel!!

It is the first time we will have used our Tesco vouchers and travelled on the Tunnel, so we are unsure of a number things, any help would be greatfully appreciated.

1 Does anyone know of a good place to overnight near Folkstone, bearing in mind we have 2 dogs who like to go for a walk.

2 Our departure will be straight after the Newark Show (spent with Funsters of course) but if we want to amend our crossing back home (sometime in June) is there provision for having a flexible ticket, or will a telephone call be ok?

3 Do you have to turn up for a specific departure time, like with the ferries, or are they more flexible?

4 How long before you set off do you have to be at the terminal?

Many thanks

Ginny and Mike

Hi

we usually use the Maidstone services on the M2 , IIRC it's £8 ( maybe more now) about 40 mins from Eurotunnel.

When you arrive at the tunnel you will either be directed to the car park or straight to the train depending on how early you are, you can park up to a max. of two hours before departure.. If you are earlier than that you may be sent back out.

If you go into Folkestone, heading towards the harbour, theres parking on the habour but if you turn right there go along Marine Parade and then onto Lower Sandgate Road parking alongside road and take the dog for walkies along the beach:Smile:

Hi Ray
Isnt that Dover your at there mate - it may be me not knowing where I am....:Sad:

There are MH parking spaces outside the Dover port Authority building alondside the road. You can walk round the corner to one of those outlet villages and as ray said your right next to the beach for the dawgs. we have stayed there many times with no problems apart from the occasonal passing car. Make sure you get in the right spaces but they are clearly marked on signs

there is parking near the harbour in folkestone, go past the hotel burstin and turn right fairly quiet, loads of space for the dogs and you can take the funicular railway up into folkestone.
eurotunnel cheap fares only cover basic crossings, so you will have to specify times for your crossing.
also was talking to a guy in chartres in france who was heading to eurotunnel.
he paid with tesco voucher scheme, and told me if he arrived early at eurotunnel they wanted to charge him if he wanted an earlier shuttle.

we use the camping and caravan site at canterbury £13 a night cus i'm an old fart

Eurotunnel used to allow you to exchange your crossing if you were held up by, say, traffic jams, but it looks like they are more strict now. Up to 2 hours late is OK. This is from their Terms and Conditions:

1.3 Check-In time

You must Check-In at least 30 minutes (but not more than 2 hours) before your booked departure time on both the outward and inward legs of your journey.

1.4 Exchangeable on or after day of travel

If you arrive at Check-In after this time (see above) your booking is no longer valid. However it may be possible to exchange your booking for the next available departure subject to the following conditions. A charge may apply.

Standard Tickets

  • If you arrive within 2 hours of the booked departure time, the booking will be exchanged without charge;
  • If you arrive more than 2 hours but no more than 24 hours after the booked departure time, the booking will be exchanged if you pay any difference between the price you paid and the price applicable to the departure for which your booking is exchanged;
  • If you arrive more than 24 hours after the booked departure time, your booking will not be exchanged;
  • These tickets are not refundable;
  • All travel must be completed within 1 calendar year of the date of booking.

Unfortunately this evening the M20 and A 20 seem to be very popular - if a bit overbooked!!
More sympathetically, I hope all those people stuck there get to their destinations and that their Christmas is not ruined.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

This is from the Kent Police website as it is at this moment

Chief Superintendent Matthew Nix, coordinating the multi-agency response from Kent Police said: 'The welfare of motorists, some of who have remained in their cars for many hours, is our primary concern. Into the night, we expect temperatures to fall once again and therefore we will be turning freight traffic around in order to ease congestion and allow the backlog of tourist traffic to pass through. This was necessitated by the closure of Calais to freight traffic.

Errrrm......are you really serious? :whatthe::whatthe:

As another poster has already suggested, the M20/A20 are currently taking bookings but be quick as the road is fast filling up.

Do you have to turn up for a specific departure time, like with the ferries, or are they more flexible?
Current Eurostar compulsory requisites for all departures are a wing, prayer, and Divine Intervention.

Alternatively you could try sailing across the Channel on one of those ferry thingys.....at least it will get you there.
