I think the Flap may be leaking a bit & Ive learnt to remove the grey cover over it before emptying it as I almost lost it when i first used it.
Ive bought all the spray lube but I havent noticed any difference.

many many years! since I was a kid
although they wont last forever, I have seen cassettes still working well over 20 years old. all the parts are easily available and other than the float switch mechanism are fairly easy to fit. either use warm water and baking soda or warm white vinegar to descale the inside and it will last longer. even a couple of 2 ltr bottles of cheap cola and leave it a day to eat any stubborn deposits, gets rid of that stale smell too.

i think its recommended to replace the rubber seal on the shutter every 5 or 6 years, but I dont tend to bother till they need it because the rubber has hardened and sometimes cracks. just changing the seal takes 5 minutes. keep the new one lubricated to extend its life

Surely the average life of your toilet cassette must be dependent upon how much pooing and weeing you do? I imagine the Queen's toilet cassette would be as new on that basis, and would probably smell of fresh paint too.

Anyway, one way to extend the life of the seal is to not close the flap fully when the cassette has been cleaned and isn't going to be used for a while.
