although they wont last forever, I have seen cassettes still working well over 20 years old. all the parts are easily available and other than the float switch mechanism are fairly easy to fit. either use warm water and baking soda or warm white vinegar to descale the inside and it will last longer. even a couple of 2 ltr bottles of cheap cola and leave it a day to eat any stubborn deposits, gets rid of that stale smell too.
i think its recommended to replace the rubber seal on the shutter every 5 or 6 years, but I dont tend to bother till they need it because the rubber has hardened and sometimes cracks. just changing the seal takes 5 minutes. keep the new one lubricated to extend its life

Its use on a weekly basis as is the van hence the post, its looks like the previous owners hardly ever used it but for me its my hoe away from home while i work.
