what should I be looking out for when buying a motorhome?

Wow! That is an extremely broad question. A bit like what to look out for when buying a car. Maybe more refining of your requirements, budget and usage might help

Layout, layout and layout!

Look at loads of MHs, think about how you are going to use it. Try out the bathroom - make sure you can use the shower and that you can sit on the loo with the door closed - believe it or not their are bathrooms where you can't actually use the loo properly unless the door is open!

Try out the bed - make sure it's long enough and wide enough.

Welcome but as already mentioned that's a very broad question. There's a book you can get on the Forum shop (link on the right somewhere) which would be worth downloading and reading first.
Otherwise, like buying a car make sure it doesn't have major hidden faults (damp!) and be aware there are a lot of scams out there if you use ebay.
