Hi all,

We are lucky to be having a new motor home being built for us, so we can have the key extras factory or dealer fitted in Italy before pickup. We are going to get a safe installed, large enough for laptops, cameras etc so it will be about 45cm x 35cm x 35cm.

The dealer has suggested one with walls made from 1.5mm steel however I reckon that's not thick enough and I could knock a hole through it with a hammer and cold chisel in no time.

Can anyone recommend a suitable safe please and post links? Probably want it under 150 pounds.

Much appreciated and I will probably post up a few more questions as we finalise the setup.

You need one of these. (y)

A Mousetrouser and Rosswog Mk4, three position semi slide activated tumbler system, patented by Joseph Rosswog in 1867. Reinforced hinges claimed to be dynamite proof. The James Gang attempted to blow the door off a Rosswog during a train holdup on the Santa Fe, but couldnt get in. (y)
According to the 1898 sales bumph, the Mk4 can accommodate up to five laptops, and is fully portable on it's own cushioned rollers, making it suitable for inclusion in most motorhomes, providing you take the fridge out. (y)

Whatever you have fitted make sure its key operated and not keypad/digital.
They can be opened in seconds using just your hands and without ANY damage....i know, I've done it with the rubbish thing i bought for home.

The stronger the safe, the more damage would be done to your motorhome removing it. 1.5mm steel is a lot stronger than anything the motorhome is made of.
Any security measures are just a delaying tactic.

Safes are OK as long as you are a creature of habit and will always use them. You don't really need a safe inside a motorhome. You do need a few good hiding places (and every motorhome has loads of those) Couple a good hiding place with a seriously loud internal alarm. With the internal siren screaming burglars will not stay inside and do a proper search. Loud internals turn all motorhome burglaries into smash and grab raids as opposed to rifling your van and stealing everything, Link Removed (y)

Thank you Tootles, you are obviously have a wealth of incredible wisdom and helpful comments - it takes one to know one and my misspent youth watching Monty Python means I too struggle to provide feedback that is actually any use other than to brighten up someone's day - as you certainly have.
It's hard to know how far to go with the whole security thing but we will be doing some wild camping and will want to make the van as unappealing as possible for potential thieves and make them really work hard for anything they manage to steal. My first thoughts are that another few bucks and extra 10kg of weight will be worth it if it stops jewellery, passports, cameras etc getting knicked so better to put in something stronger up front. I saw this strong box on Amazon which looked pretty good. Amazon product ASIN B001VBQZV0 only problem is they don't ship to Europe and the thing costs a lot more if bought in France (how does this Common Market thing work again). Another Other option is maybe this one Amazon product ASIN B0089ZB8RM which looks robust

It will only be as strong as it's weakest point. Vans loose cat converters and boats loose secure outboards even if it requires cutting the stern off to get it.. I'm with Jim do without a safe...

I think you have got that wrong, wild camping is probably the safest, the toe-rags don't venture out onto the hills they are uncomfortable out of their urban environment.:D
I've only ever met two people who have had stuff stolen from motorhomes, both were on campsites at the time.

Edit: Friend of the boss's had their van broken into at City Europe.

Er, would you consider adding The Rosswog into your book on the next printing Jim? :)

Why, thank you! You are too kind! For the measly cost of just fifteen English groats, you can become a full member of *FUN*, which would allow you access to probably the best motorhome site in the Universe, and allow me to take the rip out of you all day!:)
Will it also be home to your Rolex watches and designer clothes?
Of coarse! And, as an added bonus, there is plenty of room for your personal porn stash, ensuring complete privacy, as long as you dont give the wife the combination. :)

I had a regular key pad safe fitted in my motorhome ( didn't know they were easy to open) A thief would have had to lift up the fixed bed mattress, removed the right 3 bed slats, chucked off the crap I'd piled on top of it, then opened it. It was mostly a delaying tactic and if someone really needed my ancient laptop........
I'd just go for a key operated safe, in the most difficult to access place. But a really good alarm system will be a better deterrent.

The cheap digital safes are only easy to open if you mount them ghe right way up. Upside down or even on end as mine is, you can thump them till you're blue in the face and they won't open. The key bit however can be opened with a pen top.

Don't know if this helps but Garrison sell a van pedal box that clamps all pedals in a box. It is supposedly big enough for smallish valuables.

Sorry dabhand I only joined up today and I have now parted with the 15 English Groats and joined your worthy guild.

It must sound like we are rolling in it but for a lot of reasons, it made sense to buy new. I appreciate the sound (and not so sound) advice from all and will buy some dog bowls for my wife's jewellery.

Thank you vanman. I will put that in the not so helpful box. We are coming over from NZ and will live in the MH for about two years. It's is really hard to get insurance for valuables under those circumstances and my lovely wife is very reluctant to be without her jewelry etc for two years. So looking for the best self insurance and enhanced security.

Please allow me to be one of the very first to welcome you Sir. (y) You will find that we are very accommodating, even to our Colonial Subjects. :) Pray tell, do you have a photographic image of your new vehicle? Or even a picture? o_O

I think this could be said as looking for trouble. She has only to be seen wearing it once in the wrong place and some eastern European gang will make you an offer you can't refuse at knife point, saying you can't remember your safe code will only result in loss of fingers.

Europe's open borders come with mixed blessings.
