Well, we had the gas problem fixed.
To give a little background, one motorhome came back from hire and had its' 6 weekly safety check, service and cam-belt done ready for it's 3 week hire next week. During this period - it was discovered that the cascade was NOT heating the water on gas.
It was serviced, stripped and cleaned etc and all was well with the world!
We thought we would 'Test' the system, and disappear wilding for the weekend on the North Coast (cornwall) and make sure everything was up to scratch - we do this fairly regularly, just to make sure the vans are operating perfectly - pays to keep the finger on the pulse, and you find faults if you experience first hand what the customer does!
Most of the wild spots where we were planning to stop, seemed to have been banned this year, so whilst eyeing up a few permitted areas - we noticed a small sign stating 'Farm campsite' It was a CCC site, open to non members and £8 per night inclusive. This compared with a site up the road that offered us a doubled up pitch, where you had to virtually share a step with your neighbour for £21, was music to our ears. We thought we would better plan the nextr nights wilding, but would stay off hook-up and test this gas.
All worked great - fired up the water heater and she was lovely.....for a moment of two, then she flamed out. Flicked it on and off a few times and she still kept flaming out. I muttered a word of ill repute, and shut it down thinking of another repair bill next week.
Few hours later, this odour of burning entered the van. Momentarily considering it to be cooling fire pits from tents not far away, and then thought to 'just check' the heater. It was hot all right - but turned OFF!
I quickly turned the gas off at the bottle, and let it all cool down after going outside and seeing the thing roaring away non-stop! After a conflab, we decided that testing was complete - it failed - and decided albeit 10.30pm, we would leave the site and head home, ready for some examining in the morning.
After some research this evening - it appears the cascade has a design fault. It there is a breeze of 22mph - which was about right for where we were, on the flue side of the van - this blows straight down the flue and extinguishes any source of oxygen for the flame - so it will source it from Inside the van by breaching the seal.
So whilst it was working fine for a while, the wind was starving the oxygen supply long enough for it to breach the seal and start eating away at the control box, thus it wouldn't turn off...or turned itself on - whichever you prefer! And all this straight after I had it all serviced!oh:
Anyway - the site was called 'West Grove' a CCC site, open to non members, and was rustic, but very nice indeed! £8 all in per unit - that is very good for the locality, and was peaceful and tranquil. Didn't have too long to check out the facilities, but had a farm shop, animals, play field and a large field of mixed and a lower with hook up. Worth a visit if you are in the area - they even had an RV pitched up there too!:thumb:
